It's a minimum of six months without play, so if he doesn't play this year (only DC left he hasn't ruled out) then he can apply for protected ranking and thus be seeded third for his next nine tournaments or the next nine months, whichever occurs first.

I doubt Nadal will apply for protected ranking. It's meaningless.

He ought to as a precautionary measure, but I suspect you're right and he won't.

If indeed he should choose to apply then he will have to do so less than six months after his last match. Here are the rules:

protected ranking is not used for the seedings ; for the purpose of entering tournaments, it might only be useful to enter the summer American MS1000 tournaments if ever he fell down to number 50 in the world or something, which is extremely unlikely. Then no I don't think he will use it.

Besides, I don't think he will drop out of top-4 during next year. For the rankings after the Australian open when you take off all points until then, he's still number 4, 1055 points ahead of number 5 Ferrer. After Miami, the same : 1230 ahead of Ferrer. After Barcelona 120 points ahead of number 5 Ferrer, and that's the way to decide top-4 seeds for Madrid and Roma. His top-4 seed should not be in danger during clay season, first time it might be in danger would be ... in Roland-Garros, if he's very disappointing during clay season.

But we might have Nadal-Djokovic (and Nadal-Federer) semis in the first half of next year, that's the main change that we should see in the first part of next year.

Could hold on to the number 4 ranking even till after Miami if he doesn't play, pretty amazing. Similar to what Del Potro did in 2010 if I remember correctly, was something like number 5 in the world after not playing half the year.

Hope he comes back soon though, not a fan but it's a massive loss to tennis when he's not around.

Berdych | Murray | Tsonga | Monfils | Raonic | Soderling

I'm starting to have doubts that Rafa will be ready for Melbourne.

if he doesn't play, he would stay top-4 only if Ferrer didn't score 1230 points, and Berdych quite the same.

Probably they will score that.

But probably Nadal will come back and score points himself in the beginning of 2013

Thanks doung, I read the rules but missed the word "not". Also, I know this from before, but I forgot. Not my best effort. I should probably leave answering questions to others.

I'm starting to think this injury is more mental than physical. Has he lost the passion to compete? Four months without competing and now people doubting him for the AO already when it's 60 odd days away, that would only be the case if it's a chronic problem, a broken bone or damaged ligaments.

Is Nadal burnt out at age 26 like Bjorn Borg?
