Re: Rafael Nadal Injury/Health Update Thread : Spanish Press: Nadal not in DC etc

Seriously Nadal-Djokovic and Nadal-Federer semis are likely to replace the more traditional Federer-Djokovic ones next year, unless Murray manages to get to number 2 : in that case for the draws we would go back to the Fedal era (Fedal being 3-4 instead of 1-2 but it doesn't change anything for the draws)

it's sort of scary with this much of a time out of the game though, you never know if he wil return great or return with something missing
2013 will be a very interesting year. After being out for so long will Nadal be competitive enough to win a slam? Will Federer be able to win a slam the year he turns 32? In the past 35 years the only player who won a slam when he was turning 32 or older was Agassi. Or will Djokovic and Murray split the slams? Will somebody else break through and win a slam? Can Del Potro win a second slam?

Sad to say I don't think Rafa can ever be the player he once was I hope I'm wrong, but as a person who has knee problems myself I wouldn't want to have to play tennis at all!

I am sad to say I have been hearing this since 2005 and it has always been as far away from the truth as possible every time it's been said.

He isn't getting younger. All these injuries are bound to have some kind of impact at some point. I hope you are right though and he can get back to his original level.

Fedal domination to resume as usual starting from 2013 for the next 5 years.

That was 7 years ago now and Nadal is no longer 19 and cannot recover quickly (obviously from the extended recovery period now required). Unfortunately the predictions as far back as 2005 that Nadal's body would limit his longevity are indeed proving correct. He's already hedging his bets he'll return by the Australian open. The longer he stays out the less his chances are of ever making a full come back.

well to say the truth, I didn't expect him to play that well in 2011 (he played great, only Djokovic was too good) and the beginning of 2012 then already he surprised me. Comparing to grinders of the past like Wilander or Hewitt, he already stayed quite better than expected.

And now he's off because of one problem which looks independent from all of his previous problems and seems to be a problem which will not hamper him in the long term.

Also mentally, he got back well from his losses to Djokovic this year (also thanks to Djokovic's poor performances and stupid errors this year on clay esp. against him).

Then well that's impossible to bury his hopes now imo.

it's just one very little sentence in an interview which was posted before which said that he was not "certain" that he would play the Aus open which caused all that fuss, I guess.

But this is just a way for him to say that he doesn't know and lives day by day.

This echoes my thoughts. It is a long time without competitive play, and Nadal is arguably moving past his peak years at 26 in any case. I'd be worried that he wouldn't be able to reach the same level of play as before if his absence was extended much longer. But then he's such a fighter, as we've seen before...

Good questions. We may be in for the most interesting and exciting season ever next year.

Nadal said he may miss AO. That would be awful, cmon get better, tennis needs you.
