So this means he won't play in September and October. This means he will possibly play Paris and the WTF.

New injury we didn't hear about?!? "Rafa has partial tear of the patella tendon at the distal pole of the patella plus an inflammation of the Hoffa’s fat pad of his left knee."

This injury sounds more serious than the Hoffa's situation. Can anyone acess on the seriousness of this new reported injury?

From that pdf:

Doctor Angel Ruiz-Cotorro will hold a Press Conference at the Real Club de Tennis de Barcelona on Tuesday September 4th explaining all details.

Basically you're saying he should play all the slams + all the mandatory masters 1000 + MC + a couple of 500 + a 250, that sounds like a pretty normal schedule to me.
Looking at the ranking as of now:

Top 4 - 19+, Djokovic
5-10 - 22+
11-50 - 20+, Haas
51-100 - 18+, Karlovic

Yes, I would call playing 18 tournaments a year a reduced schedule. It it were to be a normal schedule, he would be playing around 22 to 24.

Look again.

A lot of those tournaments are zero point penalties, in Djokovic's case 3 are, so he's only played 16.

I hope he will return at the smaller tournaments before the AO. He can try to get into shape there and than return fully recovered at the Australian Open 2013.
There really isnt much reason for him to play the rest of the year. It was never a good time for him anyway and not really that many points to defend. Enjoy the Golf and we'll see you next year.

Must be pretty serious if they are dedicating a press conference to it with a Dr.

I don't know anything about medicine and physiology but a "partial tendon tear" doesn't sound too good. Also it is mentioned in the announcement that he goal of avoiding surgery was achieved. This means they even considered surgery which points to a somewhat complicated issue.

I`m no expert, but why did he wanna avoid a surgery?Wouldn`t have been a better solution longterm having a surgery and after 6-7 months rest get back on track.
Avoiding surgery sometimes can backfire and in the end he will be forced to have 1 and the break will be even longer.Look at Del Potro

I have the exact opposite opinion, I think it's better to try and heal without surgery.

I agree.
If the damage is not too extensive, it is better to avoid surgery.

Yes, the rest and recovery may be longer, but it will be better in the long term.

Rafa might still play in 2012...

http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsCont...wo-months.aspx

"A two-month layoff will mean that Nadal will miss the rest of the ATP regular tour season, but could conceivably play in the ATP Tour Finals which will be held in London November 5-11 as well as the Davis Cup final should Spain win through."

I'm still of the belief that he won't play again until January 2013, but it is entirely conceivable that he could still end up playing in the WTF and if they advance to the finals, Davis Cup 11/16-18.

That's the normal advice for most injury involving knees or back. Avoid the surgery as long as it's possible and there are other options available. There are very large risks involved in such surgery so it's usually regarded as a last option.
