Nadal is highly skilled. There is really no argument to made against that. But his strengths are highly tied to his physical condition. When that is compromised, he's in trouble. That's the real concern about his future.

There's no point for Rafa to come back after the US Open, he'd better get all the rest he can and start strong the next season

Rafael "The Matador of Spin" Nadal
Roger “The Magician of Precision” Federer
Del Potro, Ferrer, Haas, Zeballos

No one said that. He'll just have to move on to next year and hope for the best. If the world were to really end in December Nadal is not who you'd be thinking about anyway.

Re: Spanish Press: Nadal not in DC; rest of season inc. WTF in doubt

I think Nadal is a massive hypochondriac so i take anything he or his camp says as a grain of salt. God he must have been such a chore to play against when he was younger, cheating/time wasting etc no consideration for any one but himself, highly self-absorbed - would have been an absolute nightmare. I have never seen such a self-intitled, spoilt sportsman.

Nadal out for the rest of the year? great now i can fully enjoy my favorite sport, i don't know about the rest of you but i'm sick of his bullshit and Spanish players in general.

Now that is just bs. Guy has serious health problems that's not made up. He has zero reason to make that up. You can bet it's costing him tens of millions in endorsements and appearances for the all the uncertainty to be floating around about his future. Zero incentive to create something that doesn't exist in this case.

More power to you for believing it. 7 RG, 8 MC, 6 Rome, beating the so called goat nine times while doing it, hell if that's not enough...
World hard court championships were the precursor to modern day RG were Max was without a championship win.

I think there could be a mental aspect to this as well as physical.

Maybe he just wants an extended break away from tennis into real life.

There are many such examples of tennis players (male and female) making the breakthrough early in their teens only to disappear in their mid-20's. This should not be a surprise.

Nadal's return can be AO 2013. No problem, he deserves some time off.

But he needs to get enough match practice to perform well at AO. Conditions suit him so that's a positive.

Re: Spanish Press: Nadal not in DC; rest of season inc. WTF in doubt

Well, according to a Mallorcan journalist today Nadal seems to be spending a lot of time on his golf game and is currently taking part in an amateur tournament. Apparently plans on playing professionally when retired from tennis! Somehow doubt this to be honest. Sure he'll play pro-ams and maybe try and play a lot like Lendl did but actually being a professional would seem a ridiculous notion....

When Rafael Nadal leaves the court, his dream is to be a professional golfer. And it prepares for Nadal to golf, in the words of his own grandmother, "an obsession". His spare time was devoted almost exclusively to "train" golf. Well, Rafael Nadal is contesting these days Balearic Championship amateur golf. For now Rafael Nadal is the eleventh (11) ranked card of 81 strokes after the first 18 holes. Unable to train what you would like, Rafael Nadal maintains a handicap of 3.7.

Roger playing nadal in Wimbledon 1st week...

That is a surprise. Golf players have knee issues to, or at least some of them. But I suppose those are different and that he can avoid the movement that hurts him playing tennis.

BTW, does he play right of left-handed golf?

Well, Ellsworth Vines was a champion tennis player, retired at 28 and 7 months, took up golf professionally, and won some tournaments, and finished top 15 in the money a couple years.

So it is not unprecedented.
