Roddick didn't have to do much because Tomic would just dump the passing shots into the net or hit them wide. How many great passing shots did Tomic hit in the match?
Try that against any member of the top 4 and it's a very different outcome.
Exactly. It's not a fair comparison. Against the top guy he probably would have been passed about 25 of those 32 times. Tomic just made it so easy.
Well, they were obviously good tactics against Tomic, who seemed pretty clueless.
I just think against better opponents, he'll need to be more careful about when he comes into the net.
It's not just about the quality of passing shots. Andy read, anticipated and executed most of his volleys to perfection. It's more about attitude and concentration than technique. He doesn't have a great approach or technical volley but when focused he can reach and put away almost anything at the net. He's done it before just not often enough. People underestimate how volatile his form has been throughout his career.
this match reminds me of sampras vs roddick 2002. absolute annihilation and schooling
He's just a kid. Cut him some slack.
give Tomic bomb a break, poor kid gets the whole world wanting him to lose thanks to Roddick and his "retirement" sympathy
will Rod still retire if he won title here?
Hypothetically? I bet he'd continue. But his chances are < 0.00001%.
Actually, I think if he made the final and lost he'd reconsider. But even that is < 0.0001%.
