The Serve-Bots of 2012

So while watching the Raonic match yesterday, the commentators revealed an interesting stat about the disparity between Raonic winning service games and return games. Raonic apparently has won 93% of service games in 2012, which is an ATP best, but has only won 16% of return games (among the lowest in this category). Using the ATP site's RICOH ATP Mathchfacts feature I decided to look at the top 20 servers of 2012, in terms of percent of service games won. Logically, if they win a lot of service games thanks to their groundgame, instead of the serve, then they should also have a high percentage of return games won. The following stat is the difference between % service games won and % return games won of the top 20 servers of 2012:

Isner - 81%
Raonic - 77%
Lopez - 72%
Muller - 72%
Anderson - 70%
Querrey - 68%
Roddick - 66%
Federer - 65%
Tsonga - 64%
Almagro - 62%
Kohlschreiber - 62%
Fish - 62%
Berdych - 61%
Del Potro - 61%
Tipsarevic - 60%
Haas - 59%
Ferrer - 54%
Djokovic - 54%
Murray - 53%
Nadal - 50%

Verdict:
Isner is a huge serve bot and Raonic is up there too.
Players like Nadal, Murray, Djokovic and Ferrer win a high percentage of service games because of what they do after the serve.

Raonic is going to go nowhere with his career if he doesn't pick up those return stats. Not that I'm complaining.

This stats are shocking because? Raonic and Isner are overrated. Specially Raonic, he doesn't have a ground game at all.

Well, I'm not shocked at all, but I hope some Raonic and Isner fans are.

Re: The Serve-Bots of 2012

Yes, Raonic has a limited game and nothing has changed since last year when I assessed he will probably be around top 10 (top 5-6 at best) and more importantly not win slams because of it.

Even guys like Dolgopolov, Berankis, GULBIS, TOMIC, have bigger chances of winning slams in the future.

Nothing against Raonic but it's just like that.

Raonic is a much better returner this year than he was last year, though. Believe it or not.

Isner on top. NID. The guy's return is as good as his ground game: atrocious.

Did you just pick 20 players at random to compare? I highly doubt those are the top 20 servers. Ferrer? nadal? Almagro?

Read the OP "top 20 servers of 2012, in terms of percent of service games won." Raonic is #1 with 93% of service games won and Haas is #20 with 83% of service games won.

The point of subtracting % of service games won from % of return games won is to see how much the actual serve helps the player win the game. Players like Ferrer, Nadal and Almagro actually hold serve 86%, 88%, and 86%, respectively. This is due to their ground game because they also break at percentages of 34%, 38% and 24%, respectively. Unlike Raonic's pathetic 16%.

Re: The Serve-Bots of 2012

I probably should not have titled the thread the way that I did. Only the players with high percentages are serve bots. No way are Nadal, Djokovic and Ferrer serve-bots. I guess it was too much of me to ask for MTF members to actually read and interpret a thread instead of just looking at the thread title, the names, some numbers, and then say things like "Ferrer the serve bot"

Re: The Serve-Bots of 2012

Yeah I knew that, I just figured Mugro didn't hold that often, oh well

and no need to use words like pathetic, I already know Milos is a "serve-bot", nothign wrong with that either, serve is part of the game
