What are you talking about, this is not new. There is a clear reason for this, the men are too powerful with the new technology so to discourage every player from serve and volleying they make balls that fluff up after about two hits. Dunlop Grand Slam and the US Open balls are notorious for that, anyone can see that by getting these cans at a store and comparing them to a can of say Prince.

They seem to be doing a mighty good job of this.

Exactly, look at how tennis was played in 2001 to how it is played today.

Re: Balls: difference between men and women

This isn't new, it's been around for at least a decade, perhaps a lot longer (I don't pay much attention to the women's game). It's a wta rule, they have to use the regular duty version of a ball, if there is one - eg there isn't in Australia.

The men use the regular duty Wilson US ball at some indoor and clay events.

Interesting, didn't know this at all...

BTW, that web site is full of S.Q.T type questions, but some are actually really interesting.

Re: Balls: difference between men and women

The article mentions the difference in speed as only marginal --- so is this a difference without distinction? Are we talking about 1-2 mph or
9-10 mph difference? In other words, does it really matter much?

Yeah... Like "fluffy balls", etc

Seriously, I came here because the title of the thread made me laugh, but I still learned something valuable. So, my thanks to the OP, first for giving me a good laugh, and second, for teaching me something new.

Re: Balls: difference between men and women

I can understand men and women having different balls as women are weaker than men. But I think there should be only one type of balls for all surfaces. (Maybe another for high altitude.) That ball should be such that it prevents pure acefests on fast courts, on the other hand not too heavy so that medium-paced surfaces wouldn't become grinders paradise. Of course ATP/ITF disagrees with me, they want all surfaces play as similarly as possible.
