Again people read the article instead of just the title. Neither of them said 'Murray is the favourite'.

Wilander yes, appears to be a Rafa fan boy for sure and for whatever reason truly dislikes Federer it seems (perhaps a bit envious). Ivanisevic on the other hand has always been friendly with Federer. I mean if I remember correctly, Ivanisevic hit with Federer before Roger played Rafa at the finals of Wimbledon 2006.

Either way, to consider Murray favorite for any slam especially this one, after having a rather poor summer HC so far (yes he may have been fatigued/injured but still), is extremely silly.. You're going to pick him over Federer and Djokovic who clearly have had success and can handle the big stages where Murray still struggles to find his best game consistently? And this is the US Open, which has been almost his worst slam considering how flaky his results have been from 2008 onwards.

Federer / Haas / Safin / Gaudio / Kuerten / Youzhny / Nadal / Gonzalez / Ljubicic / Hewitt / Soderling / Wawrinka / Coria / Nalbandian / Kohlschreiber

FORMER tennis greats Mats Wilander and Goran Ivanisevic both believe Andy Murray will end his long wait for a first grand-slam title by winning the US Open starting next week in New York.

Re: Wilander&Ivanisevic: "Murray is the main favourite for US Open"

Mats and Goran knows their tennis. I also hold Murray as top favourite to win (for the first time in a slam). If you think about it he's a bad matchup for old Fed. Murray got the defense, he got the physicality and he got a MUCH BETTER SERVE than Nadal. In the Olympics F he also proved he got the tactics right. He knows he can grind it on important points like BPs and he knows his backhand is much more solid and less error-prone so if he plays solid and with power he gets a lot of "gifts".

Murray has a pretty decent record vs Fed on HC. It's not like he's an overwhelming favourite over Federer but if they meet I'd probably give a 55-45 advantage to Murray

Re: Wilander&Ivanisevic: "Murray is the main favourite for US Open"

Djokovic has played too much recently, Nadal is out and most other players besides them and Federer are no threat to Andy in slams, unless it's Ferrer on clay.

Federer is the only threat, Djokovic will be out of steam quite badly with how much he's played recently.

A Federer/Murray final would be an ideal final. Andy can do it. He did it on grass, which is Roger's best surface and Andy's 2nd best.

ANDY MURRAY

SLAMS: 2 WINS, 7 finals, 9 semi-finals, 7 quarter-finals...
MASTERS: 11 WINS, 5 finals, 11 semi-finals, 18 quarter-finals...
WTF: 3 semi-finals...
OTHER: Olympic gold and silver medals, 1 Davis Cup title...
MATCH WIN/LOSS: 558-166...
TITLES: 35 and counting...

Who is Darren Cahill predicting? He's predicted the first 3 slam winners right this year.

Fed has achieved nothing of note at the USO in 4 years...I'm sure Mats and Goran factored that into the equation as well.

A fit Ferrer can make his life very difficult on any surface.

Murray has not achieved anything either, other than entertaining the haters by losing to Wawrinka and Cilic

2008: won
2009: final, lost in 5 sets was 2 points away from victory
2010: semis, had 2 MPs
2011: semis, had 2 MPs

Roger has reached the final 6 consecutive years and had MPs in the last 2 years to reach the finals.

I think only this makes him a favourite for the US Open.
