maybe I misinterpreted it, but the quote is exact: "[...]that's why he's been the world no.1 for so long now...". Maybe subconsciously Roger sees Novak as a better player atm...

Q. Do you think you would have been able to play as well as you played today, or you think you would have pulled out from the game if it wasn't the Masters Cup final?

ROGER FEDERER: No, Roger Federer doesn't pull out. Otherwise he doesn't walk on court (smiling).

Yeah I'm pretty sure Federer considers himself as an inferior player to anybody.
He's simply being polite and stop looking for any overtones in this interview.

True.

~It was a nice interviwew with Fed quite entertaining, but yeah i didnt get what the OP got from that. Fed judt stated the truth tht Novak is no 1 on HC, if he said anything he would have looked delusional.

Fed took a page from Nadal's mind tricks book.

"I won this tournament four times but Nole is the favourite tomorrow, no?"

"he's number one on hard courts, no? I go out and try my best, no?"

Fed is missing Rafa on tour so he's giving interviews Nadal-style.

8th day of July 2012: 7-time Wimbledon champion!

Once upon a time there was a myth about strong and weak eras. On this glorious day the clownery was eventually unmasked: 30 y.o. past-prime daddy Fed became #1 once again in the supposed strong "Spartan" era with his rivals at their peak.
And they all lived happily ever after.
Long live King Federer!

I believe Fed hasn`t that feeling (that Nole is better play on HC even now). Yes, results speak otherwise, but to my mind Roger never admited to himself that anyone can be really better than him on any surface (with the exception of Rafa on clay). See him walking like a boss today too, body language shows it. Very little, but not unimportant reason of his success - he believes he can crash anyone if he plays his tennis.

Federer taking a page from Nadal's book

Fed was playing way better than Novak at both the AO and USO. In USO Djoko got lucky (you can't say you're better than the opponent when you have to save match points) and at the AO Fed was beaten by his nemesis, but he would have buutchered Djoko had they met.

Question: Which of the two players has the most HC wins since last September? Answer: Federer.

Question: Which of the two players has the most Top-10 HC wins since last September? Answer: Federer.

Djokovic and Federer haven't met on hardcourt since the famous US Open match, which was the moment everything changed for Federer (and one match later Djokovic 2.0 disappeared...) So I think either can win it, depending on their respective forms this evening.

Federer's only win over Nole was in 2007. Nole has bitchslapped him in their two other meetings.

"hard courts" is a generic word : Miami and Cincy are completely different, and the Australian open in the past was clearly quicker than now.

Djokovic can be said as better on slow hardcourts (of course he would have defeated Fed in Australia even though Fed played Nadal in a very cold day, which made the game very slow), but quick hardcourts are another story, esp. in Cincy which is the fastest hardcourt surface. And the US Open is the most important quick hardcourt and they had epic matches there.

2008 Fed had mono. 2011 Fed was beaten fair and square (although the match was more of a contest than the score suggests) but in 2012 Fed was playing way better than in 2011 and Djokovic way worse.

In 2008 and 2011, Nole made the two best slams of his life, he was much more vulnerable in the AO 2012.

I really think he would have lose against Federer in this AO 2012 because he was average while Federer was very convincing. But we'll never know, and such things happen all the time.

Would Federer have won the FO 2009 without Sod? Probably no
Would Fed have won the AO 2006 without Baghdatis? Probably no
Would Nadal have won the French 2011 without Federer? Probably no
Would Djokovic have won Wimbly 2011 without Tsonga? Probably no

But in the end of the day, it's Nadal who have been owned.

IMO, Wimbly 2011 would have been in the bag if Federer had reached Djokovic, the same for the USO without this unreal
return (though Federer would have a chance there), and if Federer was in the Djoker's semi in the AO, huge chance as well.

In case you'd forgotten, Federer had mono during the Australian Open 2008 (and recurring for a large part of that year actually). Fair enough, in the 2011 match Nole was just far superior, but in 2012 he didn't look anywhere near as invincible (lost a set to Hewitt, was taken to five by Murray and Nadal).

The match-up/mental issue/choke (or whatever you want to call it) happened against Nadal in the Semi-final as it nearly always does, but before that Federer looked the strongest of the Top 3. He hadn't lost a set (in fact, I don't think he'd been broken?) and was running high on confidence from the end of the previous year.

Obviously, Djokovic won more matches than anybody else and deserved the title, but if he had drawn Federer I don't think the match would have been anything close to a "bitchslap", rather; I think Federer would have won in 4.

No point in speculating really, but if you're going to bring up their rivalry at the AO at least put it into context...
