The ATP deserves a better class of player, and I'm gonna give it to 'em - Djoker

GS runnerup means very little. Give me a Masters 1000 title any time.

warm regards...

6-2, 6-3, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-0 (and not even finals).

... and yet, no matter how you look at it:

#1 12 months ranking: Federer

#1 race ranking: Federer

Outperforming both Nadal and Djokovic...

Even the ATP ranking system (which people here used to convince me that Fed is more worthy than Djoker as #1 ATM) says that a Slam final is better than a Masters 1000 title.

Monaco - Del Potro - Nadal - Wawrinka - Robredo - Dimitrov - Chardy - Berdych

Blimey gov'nor...are we going through this again?!

Let's look at it one more time: If we are going to measure the qualitative judgment of who is "better" on the quantifiable, namely tournament records, which seems to be what you want to do, then we cannot just compare the three slam tournaments they have played in when deciding who is the best player between the two in 2012.

We have to consider all the other tournaments as well. Obviously the other tournaments are not as important as the slams, but they still count. If they didn't, the players wouldn't bother with them. And Federer has 2 Masters titles, 2 ATP 500 titles, one slam and two slam semis. Surely this is a better achievement than Djokovic's 1 Masters title, one slam, one slam final and one slam semi. Surely we can agree that 1 Masters title and 2 ATP 500 titles are worth more than the difference between a slam final and slam semi?

Is it over yet?

Re: Federer 2012 > Djokovic 2012?

It's becoming more clear now who is the best in 2012 guys. Yet again Djokovic bows out in the semis of a big event and Roger goes on to the final. If he wins the title, which I suspect he will, it will be even more clear. But of course the big one is the USO.

Indeed. If Federer wins on Sunday, as one would expect, then the balance of power swings heavily in his favour. But the crucial tournament for both players is the last slam. If one of them wins it, then it will more likely than not result in year end number one.

But Murray is playing some great tennis, and got as close to winning a major as he has ever done at Wimbledon. He could go one better at the US. Or we could see a triumphant return from everyone's favourite gurning spaniard. My pants are wet at the prospect of this year's US Open. It's going to be great. So much on the line...

No doubt. The USO will be very interesting. It's pretty open. Roger in top form, Djoker and Nadal looking to prove something, Murray catching up. Could be another Fedray final for all we know.

Well the Olympics is over and Roger got silver while Djoker got nothing. I think the answer to this question is becoming more and more positive.

...although not more positive for Djokovic. He seems to have regressed somewhat since the AO. I know grass is not his best surface, but still...going into Wimbledon and Olympics as n.1 he/we would have expected more than two semi-final appearances, being beaten in the process by his two nearest/fittest rivals.

He better sort that slump out soon, or else he may find the last slam another disappointment. Do you think he can win back n.1 before the US Open??

I don't think he can do it before, but USO itself is his best chance. But who knows, now that federer, murray and nadal(?) are capable of beating him. He would have to beat two of these players to get the trophy. If his form doesn't improve by then, that's not gonna happen.

Agreed. And he'll be seeded to meet Federer in the final. IF Federer makes it (which involves avoiding Nadal in the draw IMO) what with him being 31 and the short recovery time between semi and final, I think Djokovic has a great chance to avenge his Wimbledon loss...

I don't think it's theoretically possible for Djokovic to get back to #1 before the USO. It's tough to call it a slump when Djokovic made semis of Wimby and the OG. He could hit back at any time.

It is possible.

"So, here are the options for Roger in Cincy to remain #1 until the USO:

- If ND wins both tournaments (11,670), Roger needs to reach the final (11,765)
- If ND has one win and one final (11,270), Roger just needs to reach the QF (11,345)
- If ND has two finals, no win (10,870), Rogers remains # 1 regardless of his result."

I am hoping Del Potro takes care of that calculation. I have him over Novak in Toronto .
