However, having watched him play a lot of matches, he is vulnerable to players who can be aggressive and consistent against him. His much talked about court positioning is part of the problem but it's also a partially technical issue about how he likes to hit shots, not only a problem about his tactics. Fact is, he needs time to prepare off both wings. Although he has great invention and 'intangibles', he cannot stand on the baseline and consistently rally with players who have superior weight of shot and aren't missing much. Impressed by his consistency though. It's funny that Gasquet has always been considered the 'precocious talent' type of player. Flashy, brilliant, wildly inconsistent, can beat anyone, can lose to anyone. He has become the antithesis of that in many ways, beats who he should, can't beat the better players.
Great post.

Re: Will Gasquet complete the CY(R16)GS?

What's the big joke about round of 16, MOST players on the tour would KILL to be consistently round of 16 in GS! No it's not quarters or semis but bottom line is for all Gasquest's flair and "talent", the technical problems with his strokes which contribute to his defensive court position are pretty much going to "doom" him to this fate.

Mental issues are sometimes still an issue but he has improved that and his conditioning is MUCH better, despite what many on MTF say who are still thinking about several years ago. But he still has very complex stokes that take time to set up for and that is always going to be a problem for him against many of the top players who can exploit that. But I still say there isn't anything more fun to watch than the few times a year Gasquet gets hot and puts on a real show.
