People say it's a mental thing with Gasquet. To me, it's more like a technical thing, he's usually not as good as the players he faces in the 4th round. I also used to believe he had the ability but perhaps not the physical conditioning or mental strength to go to multiple slam semi finals. However, having watched him play a lot of matches, he is vulnerable to players who can be aggressive and consistent against him. His much talked about court positioning is part of the problem but it's also a partially technical issue about how he likes to hit shots, not only a problem about his tactics. Fact is, he needs time to prepare off both wings. Although he has great invention and 'intangibles', he cannot stand on the baseline and consistently rally with players who have superior weight of shot and aren't missing much. Impressed by his consistency though. It's funny that Gasquet has always been considered the 'precocious talent' type of player. Flashy, brilliant, wildly inconsistent, can beat anyone, can lose to anyone. He has become the antithesis of that in many ways, beats who he should, can't beat the better players.
Very good post. Still great to watch though. And you wouldn't bet against him causing one or two upsets in future slams.
