I can't believe it's been that long.
in 2002, Guillermo Cañas, ranked 19th, came out of nowhere to lift his biggest title in his career in one of the most brutal draws the ATP has ever seen.

Cañas came early (thursday morning) thanks to an early exit to Massú in Kitzbuhel to prepare for his first hardcourt tournament since Miami and went all the way despite having to face Roger Federer (#10 back then), Yevgeny Kafelnikov (#5), Marat Safin (#2), Tommy Haas (#3) and Andy Roddick (#12) for the title.

Every single player in his draw was a top ten somewhere in their career. Srichaphan (his 2nd round opponent and #60 back then) just came from upsetting Agassi at Wimbledon and less than a year from that, he would rise to #9 so that makes it even more impressing.

There is a blog from Willy Cañas about this, from ESPN Latin America where he writes a column, describing his week http://espndeportes.espn.go.com/blog..._canas&cc=7586

Also, here is the draw for anyone who wants to check it out:

Who's to say he didn't dope before he eventually got caught? Canas has a taint, sorry.

But I love DelPo!

Still, you can dope yourself all you want but nothing will make you have such an inspiring run in a TMS Event. Also, I don't see why for example people don't treat Agassi the same way when he himself acknowledge he got doped and got away with it a lot.

Will you say the same about Agassi or are you just prejudging him because he didn't get away with it the way others did and do?

That argument is kinda lame... and this is off-topic because it has nothing to do with what happened 10 years ago.

Canas actually just launched another appeal to get his doping ban retrospectively quashed

This is one of the draws I think of when I think of difficult draws.

It was a great tournament overall with some exciting matches like Hewitt vs Mantilla, Nalbandian vs Henman, Rios vs Moya, Safin vs Rios, Koubek vs Gonzalez, Johansson vs Ljubicic, Ferrero vs Enqvist, Kafelnikov vs El Aynaoui Scrichaphan vs Kratochvil, Haas vs Sampras, Canas vs Haas and to top it off Canas straight setting Roddick. Most of these matches were close ones and nobody knew who would win. I remember Safin being tipped to win the tournament after beating Rios but he didn't even play well in that match, despite it being a crazy rollercoaster-like match.

One of my fondest memories in tennis is Toronto 2002.

Then the following week Moya winning Cincinnati.

I can't recall Agassi ever admitting to using performance enhancers, though some instances do like fishy ie. pulling out of Australia in 2002. I remember Rios said something on radio or in an interview that Agassi ran from a random drugs test because someone had apparently kidnapped his son.

It's stupid to believe that the only dopers on tour are the guys who've been caught, everyone knows that tennis has many holes in this area.

This meant relatively little, considering he was a drug cheat.

If he were drugged, I doubt it made that big a difference. Grandiose title for him.

Cañas is not Puertas. He didn't dope, and from what I read about the case (which I dont remember much now), it was accidental and hardly an enhancer.
That's why Cañas is insisting on it. He wants to have his reputation clean and cleared from all doubt
