Ideal U.S. Open: Murray Vs. Del Potro.

Based on recent events I think that Murray and Del Potro are the two players with the most upward momentum heading into the North American Masters events and ultimately the U.S. Open.

If these two were to face off in the U.S. Open final (if they are on opposite sides of draw then I think seems quite possible) who would you favour based upon their games and the U.S. Open surface?

Thank you.

Re: Ideal U.S. Open: Murray Vs. Del Potro.

Would be devastating for Murray to have lost in five grand slam finals...

If Del Potro and Murray were to face each other in the final... I think Del Potro would win.

And, if Del Potro were to win the U.S. Open he would become world #5. Would it then be legitimate to refer to there being a 'Big 5' in men's tennis?

Under these circumstances, yes. Want to see it happen first, though. Not that I am ruling it out. I just think other scenarios are more likely.

Re: Ideal U.S. Open: Murray Vs. Del Potro.

Everyone who thinks that DP`d win easily in such match completely forgot their previous matches. I watched all of them and can confidently assert that this match-up suits Andy. Del Potro can`t hit through him and in long run it leads to DP`s mistakes. Murray is smart enough to mix his game with slices disturb argentinean strongly. On hardcourt Peak DP vs Peak Murray >>> Murray`s win. All the same is true about both on average level of play. But in Slam final you never know with Andy.

Gasquet is next №1

It's hard to look past the 5-1 H2H for Murray, including their only GS meeting at the USO, although all their matches have been close. They haven't played each other since WTF in 2009 but, if anything, Murray has improved more that JMDP over that period.

Don't forget Stupid Saturday in all of this. If Del Potro won a five-hour epic, then Murray would feast on the carcass becoming the first vulture GS champ.

Just found this in an old thread:

And yeah, that would be an ideal final for me too!

haha! I remember that - it was so dumb. Presumably Andy's mum would be there in the stands if it was a final as well.

Re: Ideal U.S. Open: Murray Vs. Del Potro.

If it was the final, it'd depend a lot on the events of Super Saturday. Murray would have a chance if he played a grueling semifinal, Del Potro probably wouldn't as his fitness is not in the same level. If one of them defeated Federer in the semis, he'd be at an advantage theoretically, as matches against Federer are usually nowhere near as physical as against Nadal and Djokovic.
