Will the men ever play best of 3 sets in the slams?

For most of the year the men play best of three anyway. So why can't the men play best of three at the grand slam events? I think the shorter men matches would balance things out a bit. It also would take stress off of the bodies of players. It would be exciting for the sport.

Go back to the WTA.

Not happening, not even dickhead De Villiers is suggesting that.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

No no... shortening of matches should be restricted to inferior games, such as doubles

In all honesty though, how is Jürgen Melzer supposed to win anything if he only has three sets in which to do it? He needs a few chances!

Sorry but 3 setter for slam always will be for girls.

A post that deserves to be on MTF Hall of Fame soon:

I think the woman should play best of 5 in Slams just like the men. They want the money so they should have to do the same amount of work to earn it.

I hope not.

I don't like hypocrites, but even worse are the ones who think it's OK to be an asshole as long as you are not hypocritical.

They do the same amount of work (for women).
I'm so fed up about these sexist comments ! Can you tell me why the best marathonian doesn't earn more than Tiger Woods, Schumacher, or a tennis player, or if there will ever be a day when a woman soccer player earn as much a Beckham ?
Earning money in sports is all about tv ratings, attendance etc. : it has nothing at all to do with the hardness of the training.

Then why bring all this "working hard" stuff when it's about comparing WTA and ATP ? Maybe because to those criteria (tv ratings etc.), women should earn more than men, and that's an issue for lots of men.

Are you serious? This subject has been done to death so many times.

The above scenario you paint. If the women earned more in TV revenue, advertising and sponsorships then the WTA would be richer than the ATP. But the prizemoney of the tournaments generated throughout the year indicates otherwise. It's not the porn industry where the women earn more than men.

For the record I don't want the women playing 5 sets and this another thread, this is about the men playing best of 3 Slams it's not happening.

Re: Will the men ever play best of 3 sets in the slams?

I wouldn't mind a best of 3 sets format for the first week only of the men's slam. It just seems like such a grueling affair and we may get better tennis in the 2nd week.

Though the best of 5 sets does make for some incredible combacks and twists and turns in a match.

Best of 5 is here to stay, and hopefully the US Open will come to their senses and stop having final set tie-breakers . Why is this the only slam that does that?

Actually there is a lot of good tennis at Slams, it's just not always on show courts and here is the most important thing.

Are the men complaining about playing best of 5 sets in the Slams? The answer for the vast majority of them is no, cause if so, then it would have been apparent already. No need to change this at Slams, just cause some people have a short attention span and the players are not whining about it.

What?

Slams should remain best of 5 all the way through. They are the ultimate test of a player's physical and mental attributes.

"My greatest point is my persistence. I never give up in a match. However down I am, I fight until the last ball. My list of matches shows that I have turned a great many so-called irretrievable defeats into victories."

I prefer shotmaking over fitness tests. 2 out of 3 would be just fine for me.
