How come Italy hasn't produced a Grand Slam winner?

I always found it strange that a country like Italy never produced a Grand Slam winner in the Open era. I just don't get it. Why is it that way?

-Almost every other neighboring country in Europe has produced a Grand Slam winner except for Italy. Italy's neighbors like Spain, France, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia all produced Grand Slam winners.

-Italy is a warm country like Spain and tennis can be played all year round but yet there's nothing to show for.

-Their current crop of players are not gonna be winning Slams any time soon. Seppi, The Fog, Starace, and the boys are not grand slam winning material. The Fog's quaterfinal run to the French Open last year was the best showing by an Italian since the early 90s which I find bizarre.

-I think a country like Italy has the potential to produce a Grand Slam winner.

Re: How come Italy hasn't produced a Grand Slam winner?

Well, it's just never happened, but I understand your comparison to other European countries. The Italian Open has always been a great tournament and thought it could have been a slam event.

But here's an issue I've thought about: There are at least a handful of players with Italian names who play for France. Are more and more Italians going over and training in France, or what? Are they losing their homegrown talent over this? Just wondering.

I know WTA doesn't count anywhere it seems (even on tennisforum.com, lol) but Schiavone won like two years ago.

1. Everyone plays soccer here.
2. Italian players, in general, suck.

And how many did France win? Also 1. Croatia, Austria, Netherlands also 1.

And Serbia and Switzerland only have more due to 2 guys (1 per country), and that's Fed and Novak. It's not like those naighboors produce Grand Slam champions left and right (apart from Spain). And your logic is good in toery, but just look at Sweden that had Bord, Edberg and Wilander (And Johansson ). It's not like there are good conditions, they were just lucky to have those guys. Czechs also with Lendl and Kodes

Djokovic | Tipsarevic | Querrey
