Q. As the older player, you don't feel like it's your role to go up to the younger players and talk to them first?

JEFF TARANGO: To say what? "Welcome to the locker room. Don't bend over for the soap."

Re: What is your favourite surface

I like all the surfaces, the great thing about clay and grass is precisely that you do see different styles of play on each. It doesn't hurt that I like players who do well on at least one of them, although inevitably I favour grass a bit more since that's the Slam I grew up with and most of my top favourites play well there. That's probably why I like indoor tennis too, when the crowd is involved there's a great atmosphere and most of the time they are involved in Madrid and Paris because they have plenty of home players to root for.

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

I like fast hard courts. I've never played on grass but i guess i'd love it. I don't like clay, but i try to enjoy the challenge.

He defeated him mostly from the baseline, but he volleyed well when he needed to.

Rafter was trying to kick his serve out the forehand but Sergi moderating his swing and blocked a lot of them low to the incoming volleyer. Bruguera's backhand pass was on fire that day, the contrast between them was great Rafter all over the net, Bruguera with the passing shots, the angles crosscourt.

Rafter should have won the match really, he had chances and Bruguera won
7-6, 3-6, 4-6, 7-5, 13-11

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

That was a terrific match even though I wanted Rafter to win. Contrast of styles was very interesting.
