Was Sampras beating Lendl's weeks at no. 1 record a big deal?

I wonder how that moment in history (tennis' history) was presented in the media (did ATP have an website back then?) at the time when Pete reached 271 weeks at the top of the rankings? I don't remember anything, actually...Was it a big fuss or just no big deal?

Q. Do you think you would have been able to play as well as you played today, or you think you would have pulled out from the game if it wasn't the Masters Cup final?

ROGER FEDERER: No, Roger Federer doesn't pull out. Otherwise he doesn't walk on court (smiling).

After losing to Nalbandian in 2005 TMC final...

It was big headline news back then, Sampras was on his quest for that back in 1998-1999, a years where a lot of players were number one, Pete was not exactly dominating, neither was he felt (by the tennis public) the number one besides his Wimbledon titles. But he did great to grab this thing at the time.

A service notice for Pete..

Little FEDERER, Roger (SUI) Versus Defending Wimbledon Champ Pete SAMPRAS (USA)
Year Tournament Round Surface Winner Score
2001 Wimbledon 16 Grass (O) R.FEDERER 7-6(7) 5-7 6-4 6-7(2) 7-5

Does he really believes this is the same Federer of then?

Internet wasn't big so it isn't felt as much as it is today.
