Congrats to Fed, although it would be 'sweeter' if he had completed the number of weeks on a "consecutive" basis. Fed had the chance then to make it consecutively. Water under the bridge.

Federer has reached his 300+ weeks in only three different periods as #1. Sampras used 11 for his 286 weeks. That is, amazingly, still not the record. McEnroe was #1 14 (!) times for his 170 weeks. Four of those were one week only, and five more were less than five weeks. Much back-and-forth those days. Today, Fed's current streak which will end at 17 weeks is the shortest since Roddick's in 2003-4.

That makes Federer the most efficient Number #1 in Open Era history. The least amount of Number 1 streaks for the most number of weeks.

Great post... you can throw numbers like this up all day and there will still be sad blind haters mouthing off that Federer is nothing but luck and fluke.

Those people are idiotic haters or worse, Rafatards or Noletards, or even worse, a combination of the 3...

It is just awesome that we were lucky enough to witness the greatest player to ever hold a tennis racket break all the meaningful records in tennis. What could be better than that if you truly love tennis and are a genuine fan of the sport?

Indeed. Fun statistic

Federer is also the #1 with highest average points margin to #2 (and #3, #4 etc.) measured in % (since ranking systems differ). I haven't done up the numbers, though. A project I have been thinking of but hasn't got around to yet.

Shame you just made this up otherwise I'd try to prove how wrong it was.

When Djokovic will take No.1 back, if it's after Basel, this statistic will become:

1. Roger Federer: 302/3 = 100.66
2. Rafael Nadal: 102/2 = 51
3. Lleyton Hewitt: 80/2 = 40
4. Ilie Nastase: 40/1 = 40
5. Ivan Lendl: 270/8 = 33.75
6. Jimmy Connors: 268/9 = 29.77
7. Novak Djokovic: 54/2 = 27
8. Pete Sampras: 286/11 = 26
9. Mats Wilander: 20/1 = 20
10. Bjorn Borg: 109/6 = 18.16
11. Andre Agassi: 101/6 = 16.83
12. Jim Courier: 58/4 = 14.5
13. Stefan Edberg: 72/5 = 14.4
14. Gustavo Kuerten: 43/3 = 14.33
15. Andy Roddick: 13/1 = 13
16. John McEnroe: 170/14 = 12.14
17. John Newcombe: 8/1 = 8
17. Juan Carlos Ferrero: 8/1 = 8
19. Boris Becker: 12/2 = 6
20. Yevgeny Kafelnikov: 6/1 = 6
21. Marat Safin: 9/3 = 3
22. Thomas Muster: 6/2 = 3
22. Marcelo Rios: 6/2 = 3
24. Carlos Moya: 2/1 = 2
25. Patrick Rafter: 1/1 = 1

Nole is forced to hold No. 1 for 53 weeks to regain his previous efficiency.

Hewitt at No. 3. Respect !!!

It's a little funny to see that at the moment every active player is ahead of every retired player (if we consider Ferrero retired).

Djokovic' comeback will one again vault Nastase into first among those with one stretch only. He's lost that distinction many times but always regained it.

That really says a lot about how powerful this era actually is. Certainly to me, I don't care if it does the same to others.
