Costa was a surprise too, although not as unlikely or as unworthy as many may think.

I would certainly agree that it's Roland Garros.

I lack direction.

Chocking makes me sad.

I'll be different and say the Australian Open. Thomas Johansson and Petr Korda were surprise champions in recent years.

Egalite!

Re: Which Grand Slam produces the most surprises?

if you mean the winner of the tourn: then RG

but also Wimbledon produces a fair amount of upsets as hardly anyone knows how to play on grass these days

Re: Which Grand Slam produces the most surprises?

Roland garros, there are so many great claycourt players as opposed to wimbledon (where there isnt as many great grass court players) so there is going to be more shocks when there are more very good players on that surface

Re: Which Grand Slam produces the most surprises?

I'd say the Australian Open. Although there haven't been many surprise winners, there have been some surprise runs e.g. Wayne Ferrreira's semi a few years ago, along with Novak. Clement in 2000 along with Grosjean that year just to name a few. Perhaps even El Aynaoui's dramatic outing in 2003.

The Australian Open tends to catch many top players off-guard because it is right at the start of the season, with little time to play yourself into form.

Are we all agreeing that the US Open produces the least surprises then?

17 (yes, yes, yes!) Slams! And counting....

I didn't list Albert because I always thought he would win RG

Re: Which Grand Slam produces the most surprises?

In terms of the top players bombing out- both RG and Wimbledon are minefields for seeds.

In terms of who lifts the trophy on the 2nd Sunday, RG. Wimbledon only has a handful of people who you can almost be assured of winning the thing. With RG on the other hand you have about 50 players who have a more or less equal chance- in recent years look at the surprise winners: Gaudio, Costa (although to me it wasn't such a surprise, I expected him to win it one day, but the timing was surprising), Guga the first time he won (again, in hindsight he is one of the best ever on the red stuff but in 1997 nobody heard of him), Agassi (again, his timing, even though he made two RG finals in the early nineties).
