Its probably been asked before but how can someone lose a match but win more points than the winner?
I know I already answered, but I went and found a RL match where this happened so you could see it in action.
As a bonus, there weren't even any tiebreaks, so it's not the simplest example (like the made-up one I gave you above).
Stan Wawrinka d Novak Djokovic, QFs Australian Open 2014, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 9-7.
First set: Novak won easily, 6-2, with two breaks. He won 28 points to Stan's 19 (a wide margin!)
Second set: Stan started playing much better, and took it 6-4 with a single break. He won 31 points to Novak's 29 (a much closer margin than the 1st set).
Third set: Stan really hit his stride and took it 6-2 with two breaks. He won 27 points to Novak's 20 (a better margin than last set, but not as big as Novak's in the 1st set).
Through three sets, then, both players had won exactly 77 points, despite Stan being up 2 sets to 1.
Fourth set: Novak broke at 4-3* and denied Stan chances to get it back, taking it 6-3. He won 40 points to Stan's 29 (an even wider margin than the 1st set).
Fifth set: Novak went up an early break, but Stan got it back. They went into extra innings, and Stan took it 9-7 off a Novak error in the end. He won 47 points to Novak's 44 (small margin).
Overall: Stan won 153 points (48%) and Novak won 161 points (51%), but what it came down to was the two Novak UFEs at 30-all in the last game. The 161 points Novak won before that didn't matter. Only those last two did.
To get even more nitty-gritty, Stan took 62% of his service points and 31% of his return points, while Novak won 68% of his service points and 37% of his return points. Novak was better on all the raw stats. But it was a really close match, and what matters aren't the raw stats - only the scoreline.
ETA: Something fun to play around with, if you feel like it - Tennis Abstract
has enough stats to roll around in for hours. I've set it to show you all of Rafa's wins where he won fewer than 50% of the points, and if you want to see similar stats for another player, just do the "apply filters to another player" thing at the bottom. Enjoy!
