Rafael Nadal: Clay Warrior's Hunt for 50 Clay Titles & 16 majors, #50 comes where?

The Clay Warrior, Rafael Nadal, Spain's Raging Bull, currently has 49 titles on clay, will he get to 50 before he retires? What about 16 majors?
That's only 1 clay title more and 2 majors. Now that he has found some of his form, it seems almost certain that he will win something somewhere. He took Monte Carlo and Barcelona and has Roland Garros to play. Does #50, RG#10, and major #15, passing Sampras, come in Paris?

If he can win at Roland Garros alone from now through 2017, he'll get his 16 majors with a total of 10 or 11 at RG? Doable?

In the race to the Open Era's King of Clay Titles he is currently tied for first with Mr. Vilas.
King of Clay Titles:
1. 49 - Guillermo Vilas (ARG) - Bull of the Pampas*
2. 49 - Rafael Nadal (ESP) - Spain's Raging Bull
3. 40 - Thomas Muster (AUS) - The Iron Man
4. 30 - Bjorn Borg (SWE) - Ice Man
4. 30 - Manuel Orantes (ESP) - Manolito
*corrected by ATP

Some factors to consider in whether he will be able to win 50 Clay Titles and 16 majors:

1. How long will Rafa have enough passion or motivation to to keep playing much longer after winning so many Roland Garros titles, and what will happen if and when he loses there at this point in his career; will it signal the end?
2. Could health issues (ex. knees, back) force him to retire early?
3. Will some other Clay court adept start taking titles from him more regularly?
4. Will he start playing lesser clay events as his performance/ranking declines more (South America, etc), which could increase his chances of getting more titles?

Some of these have been answered recently. There are probably more factors which you will uncover as this is discussed.

Let's use this thread to keep track and discuss his chances as he hunts for more titles.
Please try to keep this discussion hate-free and reasonable, or mods will take action.

Respectfully,
masterclass

regarding the fact he didn't win a non clay court title for almost a two year this is the only thing which he could hope for

It's possible If most of the hc season gets switched to clay. He needs to avoid the likes of Rosol though.

Only 50 ? You do the guy a great disservice. People are always underestimating Rafa and he's always proving them wrong. 50 titles in NID.

Don't know. Would be easy if he decides to play in tournaments like Hamburg or Acapulco but I don't think he plans it.

Never ever give up

MC-Barcelona-Rome-RG X 4 = 16.

It's gonna be tricky if he starts to fall apart, but it'll look good if he decides to add smaller clay tournaments to his repertoire.

Re: Rafael Nadal: Clay Warrior's Hunt for 50 Clay Titles

From that list, it seems crazy that Orantes won 30 clay court titles, including 1 at Monte-Carlo, 1 at Rome, 2 at Hamburg and 3 at Barcelona, but none at RG. Surely he is the best player by far, of the open era at least, never to have won the RG title.

I know he won the 1975 US Open on green clay though. He saved 5 match points against Vilas in his SF (Vilas was two sets to one up and was leading 5-0 *40-0 in the 4th set) and straight setted the best player in the world Connors in the final.

Yes, good observation LeChuck.
Probably lefty Manolito's best chance at Roland Garros came in the 1974 final, where he was more of a familiar face at the time than the 1st time winner, 18 year old Bjorn Borg. After Orantes was up 2 sets to love, he lost it - 6-2, 7-6, 0-6, 1-6, 1-6. Borg turned it around almost as completely as one can. Here is an old clip I found of the 2nd set tiebreaker in that match:

Re: Rafael Nadal: Clay Warrior's Hunt for 50 Clay Titles

He is alredy King of clay, best ever on clay, doesn´t matter how many clay titles he will have at the end of his career. I mean he can have 10 per year easily with going to South America and make Almagro sad at the beginning of the year and win those 250s + Acapulco... Muster´s record is good, but comparing to Rafa it is joke, i mean Muser had like million what currently would be 250s and just 1 RG and he was king of clay of 90s.... Raf on other hand from his clay titles has 7 RG, 8 MC, 6 Rome and 2Hamburg/Madrid - 4 biggest events on clay and Rafa has so many of them.. if i include Barcelona which is arguably most prestigious 500 clay event historically - Hamburg was Masters,, so if i include Barcelonas than his numbers from 5 biggest clay events are fantastic and even if somebody like Muster had 200 clay titles from those ,,250,, of his era... it is nothing comparing to Rafa´s clay titles from biggest events.

Re: Rafael Nadal: Clay Warrior's Hunt for 50 Clay Titles

Nadal could have won 100 clay titles if he played all those claycourt tournaments Muster and Vilas played every year. Like 10-15 clay tournaments every year, many of them without facing a top 50 player.

All things are subject to interpretation whichever interpretation prevails at a given time is a function of power and not truth.

True. Credit to Rafa to aspire to become an all-surface moonballer.
