45, maybe

what is the record again, vilas with 46?

if he reaches or surpasses vilas, then he's done well

regardless, he is already the best of all time on clay

he holds all the relevant records at slam and masters level, plus winning streaks and consecutive tournaments

lets not forget that vilas (and muster) actively played and won a lot of small clay tournaments (250s equivalent), nadal has not spent his career doing this

Re: Rafael Nadal: Clay Warrior's Hunt for 50 Clay Titles, #38 comes where?

He should certainly pass Muster this year if he recovers his form by the spring - even in his worst years has always won at least 3 on clay. Will have Acapulco, Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros to try from...

As for 50, that could be tough. Depends on whether he makes the Golden Swing a regular thing. If so, he could rack up a few more. Hope he surpasses Vilas by the end of his career - think he will...

Re: Rafael Nadal: Clay Warrior's Hunt for 50 Clay Titles, #38 comes where?

it would be cool if he does reach 50, but as some have mentioned, what does it matter, he's already beaten every single clay record so drastically. the rest of the great clay courters are on this planet, and he's in space, Nadal, as far as his legacy on the surface

It's quite possible for Rafa to end up with more than 50 clay titles

He will probably do that from now on, Vilas' record is not safe.

i think this clay season is the determining factor. nadal is past his best as a player, and on clay, yes, even on clay

so it's all about winning what he still can. can't be expecting 8, 10 titles a season now

#38 in Acapulco

RAFAEL NADAL and GRIGOR DIMITROV

Rafa winning at least one slam in 10 consecutive years is the best achievement in Open Era tennis since Laver won all 4 Grand slam tournaments in the same year!

Don't ever underestimate the heart of a champion!

Nadal: Ferrer is favorite in Acapulco final

Rafael Nadal, who holds a career 16-4 head-to-head record against compatriot David Ferrer, says he doesn't consider himself the favorite in the Acapulco final against his Spanish Davis Cup teammate.

Ferrer has only beaten Nadal once on clay, which was the first time they faced off in Stuttgart in 2004. Nadal is playing just his third tournament since he took seven months off due to knee trouble. He has a career record of 37-5 in clay-court finals and has never lost to a fellow Spaniard in a final (11-0). But he was upset by Argentine Horacio Zeballos in the Vina del Mar final last month.

"Being in the final is a win for me," Nadal told reporters. "I'm not in a position to pick me in any case. First, because the rival I have is one of the most difficult that you can find, and one of the opponents who is in the best form."

Nadal added that Ferrer is in better shape and has many more matches under his belt this season.

"But for me it's a game that I will enjoy and try to win," he said.

yes , but you not forget than in vilas`s times , the competition was much more harder over clay and even in the 90s too.

nadal main competition come from two fast courts players like nole or fed.

Nadal has won 2 clay titles this year. Will also win Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome, Roland Garros. Madrid is always a toss-up, but he'd be top 2 favorite, and tis not blue clay this year. 50 is a sure thing.

Re: Rafael Nadal: Clay Warrior's Hunt for 50 Clay Titles, #39 comes where?

Well, it looks like the Acapulco favorite capitulated to the Clay King who played too well, no?
Rafael Nadal certainly needed this win to build confidence. But will it be enough confidence to return to hard courts against the best at Indian Wells or Miami? Well, hard courts are mostly irrelevant for this thread.

Monte-Carlo for Nadal's #39 on clay? No doubt he'll be the people's favorite.
But Nadal will admit that Novak Djokovic is the true favorite; he's #1 in the world and playing fantastic, no?

Respectfully,
masterclass
