2012:If a top 3 player enters a tournament-No one else can win. (Except Doha + HALLE)

Following this thread.
I don't know if something like this has ever happened, but IMO this shows how ridiculous the dominance of the top 3 is.

If one or more of the top 3 players in the world entered the a tournament this year, the tournament was always won by a top 3 player - Except Qatar Open.
This is a pretty remarkable stat, since every tournament is filled with top 10 players*, and some of those tourneys were skipped by some of the top 3.

Doha: Nadal, Federer - Tsonga Wins. **
AO: Djokovic, Nadal, Federer - Djokovic wins.
Rotterdam: Federer - Federer wins.
Dubai: Djokovic, Federer - Federer wins.
IW: Djokovic, Nadal, Federer - Federer wins.
Miami: Djokovic, Nadal, Federer - Djokovic wins.
Monte-Carlo: Djokovic, Nadal - Nadal wins.
Barcelona: Nadal - Nadal wins.
Madrid: Djokovic, Nadal, Federer - Federer wins.
Rome: Djokovic, Nadal, Federer - Nadal wins.
RG: Djokovic, Nadal, Federer - Nadal wins.
Halle: Nadal, Federer - Haas.

* Murray played most of those of course, so there was competition.
** I have to mention that Fed has retired with a back injury before Doha SF. You know what would have happened otherwise.

I'm amazed at Murray's lack of wins this year.

1. Murray wins Wimbledon 2016 after Djokovic is blue shelled by Querrey. Thanks Querrey!

2. Murray wins Olympic Gold for the second time after Djokovic is blue shelled by Del Potro. Thanks Del Potro!

3. Murray wins US Open 2016 after Djokovic is blue shelled by [pending]. Thanks [pending]!

In all the Grass Slams in the last year Federer has won them all (Except Wimbledon 2011)

Stats are boring when there is a random exception

Impressive. It really is a testament to their current superiority over the field.

Also expected that Tsonga would be the one exception, he's one of the few guys with the game to beat any of top three players.

Berdych and Del Potro also had their chances. But Berdych's mentality and serve let him down in the Madrid final and he lost a close one to Federer; Del Potro also lost a close one to Federer in Dubai semis, where a few big points made the difference - he'd have surely beaten Murray in the final.

Hopefully these two, and Tsonga, will have more chances during the remainder of the season and will take them.

Just change it to the Australian Open.

Federer - Emperor of the Slams, King of Hard, Lord of the Australian Open, Lord of Wimbledon.

Still, you do remember that Tsonga didn't beat anyone of the top 3 there, right?
But you are probably right that he is the most dangerous one in terms of making an upset. I'd say he has the best chances of pulling more than one win in a row against top 3 (except Murray of course.. )

Re: 2012: If a top 3 player enters a tournament - No one else can win. (Except Doha)

If you include Murray the last time the big 4 didn't win a tournament where any of them were entered, was all the way back in Paris 2010. And that was the Sodaking.

Mugfils was the last not top 4 player to beat someone in the top 4 in a tourney that a top 4 player didn't win, beating Murray and Federer! before falling to the King. Djoko lost to Llodra.

China Open last year is the last major title that was won by someone not in the top 4. I don't believe there's ever been a sweep.

As for Murray, yeah, he went like this last year, but he also won Queens. Now, he loses final points.

Yes, but he can't be blamed if the top 3 players failed to progress far enough to face him, or in Federer's case withdrew.

Disagree about Tsonga being the most likely to take more than one in a row, that's Del Potro for sure; Juan is the only one I fully believe that, if he beats one, will keep up the level in the following round. Tsonga can play at a level where he's certain to beat any player, like AO 2008 vs Nadal or the last three sets vs Federer at Wimbledon, but he's too unpredictable and usually follows one untouchable performance with an error-prone one. As much as I like Jo, smart money would be on him getting eliminated right after making one upset.

Well, that particular one is over. Murray entered Queens and is not winning the title.

now there are 2 exceptions, more or less bordering on expected now, nothing suprising about it

I'm not. It is not until after Wimbledon where he usually starts raking in the titles.

Really?

I think they have played about 4 times on hardcourts, Murray has won everytime.
