Queens R1: Soeda def. Phau 6-2 6-2

Sad result for the game, obviously, but Bjorn cannot play on grass and has lost his form completely. Broken 6/8 times. Soeda, especially on grass, although he's a scrub, is one of the worst possible match-ups for someone as inconsistent and undersized/underpowered as Bjorn.

Expected win for Go. Phau is winless (0-12) on grass in his career

:dumbcomment:

I'm sad Björn lost, but the far better grass court player won deservedly.

Wow Many of German can play on grass and win several matches.

Phau>Soeda overall, though. And Soeda is a scrub, the player with talent lost here. So overall, that makes it a sad result.

I think they're pretty equal in talent. Björn has always been a journeyman (and I say that as someone who greatly enjoys watching him) And he's at the end of his career, whereas Soeda is enjoying his best surface. Try not to have your preferences cloud your vision.

Bjorn might not be good on grass, but Soeda is supposed to be worse period.

Re: Queens R1: Soeda def. Phau 6-2 6-2

Soeda gets a disproportionate amount of slack on this board. Sure, he's not the greatest player. And no, he won't be Top 100 for that long. But he does know how to play.

In many ways, Filo, Soeda is similar to Hajek. Great in Challengers; crap on Tour. The difference is in the surfaces they do well on.

Re: Queens R1: Soeda def. Phau 6-2 6-2

There is no way in hell they're equal talents. Equal level players, perhaps, but not equal talents. Bjorn has way, way more talent than Soeda. He's a journeyman because he's short, is inconsistent and underpowered due to his height. But his shotmaking ability far surpasses anything Soeda is capable of.

Hajek has more talent than Soeda. And the challengers Jan does well in generally have actual good players. Soeda, OTOH, beats guys ranked 150-300 in the Asian challengers he plays. And he only plays well in Asia.

Soeda knows how to play but he gets flack on this forum because he lacks talent. People look at him and see a scrub player who can't really do anything and never has shown he can beat really good players. It is what it is.

I'm glad to see we can finally agree on the fact that Karol Beck isn't a really good player.

And Wawrinka?

You are right about the caliber of Challengers. Hajek might be a bit better, but I am sure you'll agree the comparison isn't far-fetched.
