Do you reckon this tournament has so far had an above average number of 5 setters?

Re: Unusual number of 5 sets matches in FO 2012, or am I just imagining it?

I have some historical data on this at home, maybe I can post in more detail later. By my count there have been 20 so far at RG this year. The historical average was ~25 per tournament, so through 104 matches you'd expect just about 20, so it actually seems to be close to average.

In fact, at this point in 2012 AO, there had been more 5-setters than in Paris this week.

I was going to start this thread myself. Does anybody have the actual data to compare?

Re: Unusual number of 5 sets matches in FO 2012, or am I just imagining it?

OK, got a chance to check my data.

Average number of 5-setters per GS: 23.8.

So there have been 20 so far, but its worth noting that, on average, there are less than 3 per tournament once you get past R3, so there is not much room to grow that number.

This tournament would have to have a scintillating finish to top 2012 AO, which had 24 through R3 and 27 total.

Highest recently is 2010 Wimbledon, with 30, and 2004 USO had 34, which I think is highest of the open era.

So this looks like a average grand slam, a bit more than usual, but recently RG has had fewer than others; the last time it got higher than 22 was 2006, and last year it had just 16.

Re: Unusual number of 5 sets matches in FO 2012, or am I just imagining it?

At Slams since 1999:
5 setter every 5.33 matches
5 setter every 5.10 matches at RG
5 setter every 5.33 matches in R128/R64

20 5 setters, 104 matches so far, so average.

Wawrinka has 3
Mathieu has 3
Goffin has 2
Who else with multiple 5 sets?

I predict a 6 set final, just because.
