It's not a coincidence that Mathieu took part in two of the other longest matches in Roland-Garros : against Nadal in 2006 (very near to 5 hours according to my memories, and one match people should note when they speak of "Isner going from 5 sets against Nadal to losing to Mathieu what a shame" ) and against Canas in 2005.

It was also huge matches, esp. the one against Nadal, and the match against Canas was very sad/unlucky for Mathieu.

As somebody said, Mathieu is not "any" French player, he's brought a lot of emotions to people during all these years. He's also a very nice and sensitive guy and a huge fighter.

Although being French myself, I don't care much about other French players personally but Mathieu has always been special emotionally.

Those slating PHM's ability should remember how well he played in that 2006 match. He had to be superman to win it, and he painted an awful lot of lines. Just not enough. It was a sick performance though.

This is all Istomin is dreaming about facing Top 3 guys - to win just 2 games in a set, against Nadal almost managed to do it in every set (photo taken in a moment of joy during the 3rd set against Djokovic at Aussie Open 2010... 1-6 1-6 2-6)

he was very very close to doing that, I remember some unlucky points, and uncle Toni saying that it had been very very tough and Rafa had been quite lucky.

Only because Nadal in USO 2010 was an all serve mug and forgot how to return completely

Two tiebreaks against Mugashvili and TB and 7-5 against Istomin

Isner is Karlovic v2.0 Useless servebot. Enough said.

Isner's FH is top 20. Backhand isn't top 500.
What rocketassist said - his forehand. Not Federer-like (no one's forehand is Federer-like ) but pretty damn good.

Isner has a pretty solid net game too and he's WAY better than Karlovic. Isner can hang in baseline rallies way better than Karlovic which shouldn't even need to be pointed out because it's obvious to anyone who isn't a hater. He's also mentally tough as nails. You don't serve bombs on break point time and time again if you're mentally weak.
