Anyone can win the Masters Cup!

I think that this year's Masters Cup is wide - open. Literally all of the field has something wrong with them!

1. Roger Federer - ruptured thigh muscle
2. Andy Roddick - knee and elbow
3. Lleyton Hewitt - broken heart
4. Carlos Moya - sore shoulder and ineptitude in matches recently!
5. Guillermo Coria - surgery on shoulder
6. Marat Safin - mentally ill (not meant in insensitive way) - face it, the man has a strange brain!
7. Tim Henman - low magnesium levels (probably the onset of old age!)
8. Andre Agassi - will have something wrong with him if he qualifies - he'll be sooooo tired he'll need his zimoframe!
9. Gaston Gaudio - recovered from injury but a little lacking in match fitness
10. David Nalbandian - Fat David - says it all!! No but doesn't he have a problem with his toe or something?

Anyway, are half this field likely to turn up? Seriously, the winner is likely to be Safin i think if he doesn't burn himself out in St. Pete and Paris. Henman and Agassi, should they qualify, i think are dark horses for the title, but seriously, you can't discount the top 3.

What are your views?

Re: Anyone can win the Masters Cup!

i agree with u, it is wide open. well it all depends on who turns up at this stage. lleyton might just be so mad that he'll whip everyone...i dunno. as u say, its there for anyone for the taking!

Re: Anyone can win the Masters Cup!

According to Andy's site, he is ok and is playing Paris and has rested. so, he should be ok

But I agree with your point - anyone can win! yay! Maybe it'll be more interesting than last year. Well not more interesting but I hope the quality of tennis in general is better than last year

Re: Anyone can win the Masters Cup!

Check Andy's mouth for cold sores when he gets off the plane (not that I believe there's one shred of truth to that Paris crap).

At this point, I would put money on Lleyton Hewitt. He's the only player that is probably healthy and doesn't have any other goal for this year. Roger is already #1, Andy wants Davis Cup, and Marat is unpredictable (which is fun sometimes). Hewitt is angry and wants something to show for all of the hard work he has done this year (and possibly some revenge against just about everybody who will be in the draw).

Best twitter posts of the epic match:

@dougrobson - Whoever is supplying Mahut with hair gel needs to ink a sponsorship deal now.

@Wimbledon - FYI, with @Wimbledon live scoring devices, please add 50 to the games in the fifth set of the Isner v Mahut match.

@HolterMedia - Nice to see that a three-day test has come to tennis here @wimbledon.

(If he qualifies) I sure as hell don't want Henman to draw Hewitt in Houston!!! He can't beat Hewitt on any day, surface etc but against a hellish Hewitt - every Henman fan is outta there!!!! Bye!

Yes... maybe so... but he's shown he can't beat some of these players the way he used to - they have caught up to him. It's the YEC, I think all the players want to win. Sure, Roger is #1 but he badly wants to defend his title. Sure, Andy wants DC, but he also wants to win the YEC and he is especially happy in Houston and always wants to play well there because of the support he gets and because his family is usually with him. and I can't imagine all the other qualifiers not wanting to win it for various reasons, especially considering the prestige of the tourney and the number of points it's worth, not to mention the prize money!

There were a couple of burnt-out guys last year (hello Moya and Ferrero, especially), but all of Agassi and Roddick's RR matches went to three sets and were exciting, the overall supremacy of Federer was fun for some (even although it has become somewhat passe to throw acclaim his way these days ) and the off-court controversy kept things interesting throughout. I'll be relieved if this year is more of the same, though a more competetive final would be nice.

Re: Anyone can win the Masters Cup!

some individual matches were exciting in and of themselves, but I thought the overall quality of play was pretty low. Just b/c a match went three sets or whatever doesn't mean it was a good quality match. Obviously due to exhaustion and burnout by many of the players, but I just thought it was too bad. I didn't enjoy the tournament much at all last year. just my opinion

Opinions are what makes this forum go round. I did say that I found the three setters exciting, personally. I thought it would be generally accepted that Agassi/Federer, Roddick/Coria and Agassi/Nalbandian were dramatic contests.

Re: Anyone can win the Masters Cup!

With all those guys burnout or injured, Lleyton has a good chance of beat a top ten player. He hasn't do that in a while. Safin and Henman at Cincy an Moya at Wimby were the last ones. Safin head wasn't there, Henman facing Hewitt and Moya on grass, good fight but he had to lose. I think his Rotterdam win against Ferrero was the best of him this year.

I think he has been lucky this year. Solid performances (good clay season) but not sure if 2001-2002 Hewitt is back. His draws at U.S. summer swing were a joke and Agassi and Federer stopped him

Re: Anyone can win the Masters Cup!

This is well on its way to being the lowest quality masters of all time

Everyone either injured, out of form or unfocused. oh joy.

The good news is that he has rested after playing with Paris.
