Roland Garros R1: [18] Wawrinka def. Cipolla 6-3 6-3 4-6 3-6 6-2

Good fifth set from Stan, played with focus, consistency and was patiently offensive. Stan was very good from the end of the first set through the middle of the second set, but from there his level became very inconsistent, bad errors, frustrated with Cipolla's game, wasn't able to finish points off easily and was making errors trying to do so, didn't return very well the middle two sets and he looked flustered and a bit down energy wise.

In the end, however, Stan had too much power, got back to playing more tactically and intelligently assertive, served well in the fifth set and Flavio's serve let him down. Tough match but a strong character win for Wawarinka.

Flavio deserves a ton of credit for turning things around in the match and getting it to five sets, he's such a dogged competitor, but the fifth set was weak from him. Too many double faults and return errors.

RG 1st round: Wawrinka(18) def Cipolla 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 3-6, 6-2

First match of RG '12 going to a five setter.

Not a good sign for Stan, to go to the decisive set versus Flavio, in the first round...

I only saw parts of the last set, where Stan were playing too good, and few levels above the italian. It seemed like he could won in 3, but he lost his concentration and let Flavio right back into it.

Geez, Stan, that should've been three sets. Hope for a quicker R2 win.

That 4th set was terrible for Stan Good win though, Flavio can be hard to beat when he doesn't make too many unforced errors.

Another 5 setter between these two with the same result. Stani started out pretty well helped with Cipolla not serving well he had 13 double faults in the match.

Cipolla got the slice and dice happening as Wawrinka lost concentration but Stani stepped it up and won the last comfortably.

The American female commentator whoever she is was hideously annoying.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Stan's a mountain physically. It really helps him in these five set matches.

strong handshake

Good match, Wawrinka's level dipped quite a bit at times but good to see him get through. I'm glad he's so fit b/c he really didnt lose a step in that 5th set. Looks like Hanescu next if that holds up
