Murray claims players who swear in English fall foul of authorities

Andy Murray admits that he should not swear so much on court but believes that as an English speaker he is punished more than many other players. The world No 4 was given an official warning for a verbal obscenity during his opening victory over David Nalbandian in the Rome Masters at Foro Italico on Tuesday but says his opponent got away with much more because he was speaking in Spanish.

Television commentators have often had to apologise for Murray's language and the 25-year-old Scot said: "I swear on court regularly. I try not to, but sometimes you forget where you are and what's going on. It's a mistake and something I try not to do, but I also understand a lot of the stuff [Nalbandian] was saying, from my time in Spain."

Murray, who meets Richard Gasquet in today's third round, added: "Because what I say is in English, we're always the ones to get the warnings. What came out of my mouth was nowhere near the translation of the things [Nalbandian] said. But it's not right to do it and I deserved a warning."

Roger Federer, who said he rarely uttered inappropriate words on court in Swiss-German these days, said Murray was probably right about English-speakers being more likely to be warned. but added: "You shouldn't maybe do it, but who cares? Sometimes it's to yourself and who cares? It happens."

what did Nalbandian say at that match?

Pushray shouldn't be making these excuses. He's a hooligan, simple as that. Nobody should tolerate his foul mouth on courts as there are people with kids present.

Umpires should grow a spine and start giving this classless clown point penalties every time he swears. I bet that would make him stop in a hurry.

You can't buy class and Pushray proved he doesn't have any. Bad image for tennis.

Just stop already, nobody should tolerate this bile you continually spew forth, it's a bad image for MTF, but unlike you I will.

A hooligan and a rascal, once again up to nefarious shenanigans.

Seriously, it's not much of an issue and I think instances wouldn't increase too much if they got rid of the rule (along with all other idiotic sportsmanlike conduct rules)

Ah come on, letting out the incidental **** curse is merely human behaviour.
Okay it might insult some, but it doesn't me.

Actually it makes me smile more than anything else most of the time - shows the players are human beings like us all.
Yes, it's 'bad', but worse things happen every day, don't they?
Of course - if it stays within 'acceptable limits' (whatever those might be).

I give out points for good racket smashes, perhaps I should do the same for volatile, emotional

Tennis is a gentleman's sport. Those rules have a function.

This is a non-thread btw.

If they are swearing to let off steam and aren't directing the curses towards anyone else but themselves it is a completely natural thing for me IMO

Rafael "The Matador of Spin" Nadal
Roger “The Magician of Precision” Federer
Del Potro, Ferrer, Haas, Zeballos

Punishment for swearing is applied in many sports, probably because they want it all to be family accessible. I see nothing wrong with that. If the players want to let off steam they can do it in other ways.

Sometimes children are watching, and parents don't want their kids exposed to bad language.
My niece who speaks Spanish saw Nando swearing in Spanish and she says to me,oooh he said a bad word!
Btw my niece is 7 years old.

the fact that minors also participate on this website doesn't keep you from using all types of swear words, now does it?

Sharkko swears all the time in matches.

Murray should learn another language if he wants to swear that bad.

Clearly Murray needs to learn a foreign language.
