Why Has There Been An Increase In Joint Tournaments?

Please don't go into bashing either the ATP or WTA, this has nothing to do with that.

But honestly the last few years the number of joint tournaments really has risen and still looks like it is rising, so yeah, why now?

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

So the ATP also makes more money out of it? That's quite interesting.

I don't want to be confronted with female 'tennis'.

Only if it involves Serena.

Money, business interests. Especially for WTA. They want some of the ATP fans to stay to watch WTA matches.

They can get more cash for TV rights as a joint event, it's pretty simple. WTA benefit more than the ATP.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Re: Why Has There Been An Increase In Joint Tournaments?

WTA benefits short term anyway.

Not sure about long term. They don't get treated like anything close to equals at the joint masters events. Lots of high profile matches in Madrid didn't even have tv coverage. Can't be good for long term growth.

In order to kill events like WTA Berlin. Who needs good events. Let's all have blue (clown) clay.

Re: Why Has There Been An Increase In Joint Tournaments?

definitely about business. Marketing is very important and costly. Do a joint event and you reduce the overall risk. Both the ATP and WTA stars can be used. Broadcasters will always have a match involving a popular name. Sponsors are more easy to attract.

Cost is saved too when certain people and facilities can be used almost over their capacity. Other arrangements can be more efficient too even if it becomes more of a scheduling nightmare.

The big losers are the players. The men dislike the joint events as WTA players tend to hog the practice court as some women players appearently refuse to practice with certain other women etc often leading to a shortage of practice courts.

Re: Why Has There Been An Increase In Joint Tournaments?

Because the WTA need people to see their games, and the cash.

ATP would still get cash regardless though.

Re: Why Has There Been An Increase In Joint Tournaments?

A couple of years ago I used to follow the WTA ocasionally, not so much as the ATP but much more than nowadays.
When Henin, Clijsters, Mauresmo, Venus and Serena. When hingis came back also.

Now I can't even tell you the top 10 women.

WTA sucks and they are paid the same as the men at slams when they only play best of 3 meaning they are paid more because they work less.....
