Re: Is a peak raonic nadals worst nightmare?

nah. his backhand is much improved but still too shaky for him to be considered a terrible match-up for rafa

I don't see how rafa could get near that serve on any sort of a quick court though.

after djokovic, peak potro still comes next in rafa mare match-ups. if he ever rediscovers his bollocks potro should win more than he loses against nadal

Raonic will win 5-10 slams as topspindoctor mentioned, but defeating Nadal in all those finals.

I also think Raonic is nowhere near his peak. Maybe in 1-2 years. By then Nadal will be in decline and any matches between them will heavily favor the Canadian.

Nadal is the best player ever in the history of the sport. Deal with it.

Wow.
I suppose Fededer plays a different sport then.

Re: Is a peak raonic nadals worst nightmare?

we don't really even know what peak Raonic will be like? a bit too young to know, but he will probably be anyones nightmare, not Nadal's. a few years ago Nadal had more select players that were very difficult matchups for him (big serves, players who hit powerfully and didn't give him time, agressive returners, etc__), however he's made his game more powerful now and ends points faster and therefore does not have as big matchup problems.

when Nadal used to play more defensively is when matchups would be hell.

he, I guess in attempt to prolong is body and physical state on tour, plays a lot more aggressively nowadays and serves bigger so players who have given him trouble in the past are doing less so now. a big example would be Del Potro who would represent the kind of big hitter that used to give Nadal trouble- now he doesn't seem to hiccup Nadal like in the past.

Ironically, I would say the only matchup that is particularly bad for Nadal at this point is another player who has nearly perfected a similar strong baseline defensive game as Nadal- Novak Djokovic.

so really Nadal's worst nightmare is someone who can cover do what he can do better... the big hitters problem is that in frusturation they will begin to miss, and a big server like Raonic gets so used to winning based on their serve they often do not develop great ground games. if you can physically outlast Nadal and/or cover the court better than him that is a huge weapon but these days little else is particularly effective given the fact that Nadal has mastered practically every shot in the game and has adapted enough that he can play defensively when necessary as well as aggressively when the time calls for it

<3 Roger Federer <3 David Ferrer <3 Juan Martin Del Potro <3 Ernest Gulbis <3

------------------------ <3 Richard Gasquet <3

Rafael Nadal

Re: Is a peak raonic nadals worst nightmare?

Nadal has never lost to Isner, Karlovic or Raonic. He's played Raonic twice and not ever dropped a set.

He actually has a good record against big servers despite hating to play them - he gets more aggressive on the return because he knows he has to and is quite good about protecting his serve. Raonic/Isner can beat Nadal - when you serve like that you can beat anyone - but I don't see why they're worse for Nadal than for Federer, Djokovic etc. Novak struggled with Isner's serve in IW just as much as Nadal did in RG.

Nadal might not serve like Federer but it would still be tough for Raonic etc. to break him - his baseline game is just way better.

I don't want Nadal to face them a lot as in some ways the game is out of your hands - but I don't think Raonic is any worse for Nadal than he is for the rest of the tour.

Re: Is a peak raonic nadals worst nightmare?

Nadal loves playing Raonic. The proof is in the pudding. Getting Raonic in his quarter of the draw at RG will be a dream for him. Milos is really good...but still not good enough to trouble the guy with probably the best defense-offense game of all time.

Peak Djokovic and Davydenko are much bigger nightmares for him. That could change though as Raonic could possibly still get a lot better; we don't know what his peak is yet.

Re: Is a peak raonic nadals worst nightmare?

Keep in mind that Raonic's two meetings against Nadal we're in 2010 when he wasn't even a developed player then, and last year when he was just coming back from injury (I mean he fucking struggled against some Japanese scrub in the opener in 3 tight sets -- Tokyo R1: Raonic def. Sugita 6-7(4) 6-3 7-6(1). Okay he's a good player that Jap guy...but still ). I'm sure Raonic will give him a tough ass match. probably even beat him the next time they play.
