Re: Endless Federer-Nadal debates (Career H2H Poll)

Roger gets to the final stages of clay court events much more often than Nadal gets to the final stages of non-clay events so Nadal will always lead in the H2H. Better to compare thier records in events that both play without regard to whether they meet.

Hardly possible since Fed is the older player and has had more time to win more titles.
The only fair, objective way to compare the two players is to wait until both their careers are finished and then look at the achievements but I do not expect the tards to wait until that moment

Monaco - Del Potro - Nadal - Wawrinka - Robredo - Simon - Berdych - Djokovic - Chardy

I said only count events in which both played. Admittedly, the comparison will be more meaningful at the conclusion of both careers (hopefully a long time from now). Early in mutual events Federer had an obvious advantage because Nadal had not reached his prime. In the last three years Nadal has had the advantage because Federer is past his prime.

Federer is great on conquering ATP Tours.

Nadal is great on conquering Federer.

Re: Endless Federer-Nadal debates (Career H2H Poll)

If you imagine a parallel universe in which H2H matters more than tournament success, you probably want to look at Richard Gonzales in his 1950s heyday & his superb records against all his main professional rivals in round-robin exhibitions. But the thing is: pretty much all those matches were played on a lightning-fast indoor wooden surface. What do you think the Fed-Nadal H2H would look like if they'd played in that age, when H2H contests actually were more important than tournaments? I would guess Fed 50 - Nadal 7. Nadal would have been Federer's pteranodon.

Nadal can have the H2H He wants, as long as Federer has the more titles as it has been, that doesnt matter at all

Re: Endless Federer-Nadal debates (Career H2H Poll)

All Federer would need to have an equal H2H would be two things - never reach the Monte Carlo final, and only reach the final in FO in 2009, stopping in the SF in 2006-8 and 2011 and QF in 2005. That would make him a lesser claycourter by merits, but still good - with one FO and six masters - and improve his H2H against Nadal to 10-10. Funny to think several people rank him lower for having won eight matches more....

Down the memory lane: did Fed really think he solved the Rafa riddle after 07 TMC SF?

They were 6-8 in the H2H after that semifinal match won quite convincingly by Roger. He previously had defeated Rafa in 2007 in Hamburg, his first clay victory (with a bagel) and also in that nice 5 setter in Wimby.

Do you think that, in the end of 07, Federer thought that, overal, he solved the riddle asked by Rafa? Did he really believed back then, after that TMC SF demolition, that he is the better player of the duo? I remember hearing him saying in a presser after their SF clash in TMC that he thinks it's Rafa's turn to bring something new in the rivalry (he was 3-6 against Rafa at the beginning of the year and he just established himself as a GOAT candidate, with Rafa as a nemesis, the questions about their rivalry were all over the place)...

I am asking this because I watched just minutes ago a highlight reel of that match and I just realised i've never seen Fed so sure of himself against Rafa...Was he for real or just day-dreaming back then? Apart from the first 3-4 matches of the rivalry, do you think that Federer ever thought he really can outlast Rafa in a tennis clash? Was the 07 TMC SF the only moment of that kind in their rivalry or do you see it differently?

Q. Do you think you would have been able to play as well as you played today, or you think you would have pulled out from the game if it wasn't the Masters Cup final?

ROGER FEDERER: No, Roger Federer doesn't pull out. Otherwise he doesn't walk on court (smiling).

After losing to Nalbandian in 2005 TMC final...

He needed to eat those darn carrots prior to that Wimbledon 2008 match.

Re: Endless Federer-Nadal debates (Career H2H Poll)

After RG2006 Roger was 1-6 to Rafa. With that speed he would be 4-24 (28 matches played so far). 2006/7 was important in this h2h correction. Fed didnt see the decline coming back then.

Re: Endless Federer-Nadal debates (Career H2H Poll)

If the point of analyzing H2H's is to determine the better player, it's important to take notice of the match-up issues and other factors (into which surfaces the matches played have divided etc) which affect only this rivalry but none other bc every match-up is different. What is clear that the match-up issues in the Federer-Nadal rivalry affect the play least indoors.

1) Half of their matches have been on clay, a surface Nadal is considered the GOAT

2) They've never met between Wimbledon and YEC/WTF, a mind-boggling statistic considering that stretch is a bout third of the tour year.

It's clear so that a random future Fedal-match will likely be on clay or slow hard, and it will be likely won by Nadal. It will do nothing in determining who is the better player, as H2H's rarely do.
