Why hasn't Italy ever produced a really great player?

France, Spain and Germany have produced some legends, but Italy for some reason hasn't been able to follow suit, why is this?

Meh, best ever #27, 1 title, doesn't cut it for me.

Volandri's better at #25 and 2 titles.

Yes, but alot of Euro countries are more into footy like those I just mentioned, yet they still produce nice tennis players.

I have so many Italians friends here in Canada... all they care is football (soccer). tennis is an individual sport ... I mean look at it, how come a small poor Balkan country like Serbia has the world #1 and another guy (Tipsy) who is what #8... no tennis history, no nothing ... that's what I love about tennis, you are pretty much on your own, no matter where you you are coming from ...

It's like their rugby. Can't use their hands.

Re: Why hasn't Italy ever produced a really great player?

Because they are more concerned with fixing matches rather trying to achieve greatness.

I'd be willing to bet that there are more tennis players in italy per capita than serbia. There may be a grain of truth in your premise however. I consider russia to be a country which emphasizes individual sports more than team sports (exception being hockey). The result is that they dominate the olympics etc.

So, it's possible that one could argue that italians just suck at tennis. Stranger realities exist in the universe. Politically correct? Nope. But who said the truth doesn't hurt sometimes?

italy has a matriarchal culture where guys live at home and have their asses wiped by their mothers til they're 45 years old.

not conducive to cultivating the independence and mental toughness required to succeed in an individual sport such as tennis.

Serbia is pretty good at sports. They've produced world champions in basketball, volleyball, water polo, and now in tennis.
