Agassi Eyes 2005 Grand Slam Sweep

Evergreen Agassi Eyes 2005 Grand Slam Sweep

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - At an age when most professional tennis players are contemplating retirement or already enjoying the spoils of a lucrative career, Andre Agassi is still gunning for bigger and better things.
The 34-year-old says he will not be satisfied by one more grand slam crown to add to his haul -- he wants to win all four in 2005.

"I'm very clear about the fact that I want to play next year," the American told a news conference in Sweden a day before his first round match at the Stockholm Open where he is top seed.

When asked about next year's grand slam events -- the Australian, French and U.S. Opens plus Wimbledon -- Agassi said he wanted "to win them again, all of them, that's my goal."

Australia's Rod Laver is the only men's tennis player to have won all four grand slam tournaments in one year. He did it twice, as an amateur in 1962 and as a professional in 1969.

Agassi, who is on course to finish 2004 in the top-10 in the world rankings for the 15th time in his ATP tour career, which began in 1986, has eight Grand Slam titles.

In 1999 Agassi became only the fifth man to win all four grand slam titles in his career, joining Laver, Fred Perry, Don Budge and Roy Emerson.

Agassi won Wimbledon in 1992, Australian Open in 1995, 2000, 2001 and 2003, U.S. Open in 1994 and 1999 and French Open in 1999.

Agassi's wife, former women's world number one player Steffi Graf, won all four grand slam titles, plus Olympic gold, in 1988.

Good luck Andre.

Well if you don't believe you can win, why would you play?

Not quite

But if he does win all 4, then he joins Borg, Sampras, Emerson & Laver at the highest tier of mens tennis (post 1960), EVER.

Re: Agassi Eyes 2005 Grand Slam Sweep

A CGYS at 35 and all slams at least twice would be enough for me to rate Agassi as pretty much the best. Sounds strange, but whose record (apart from perhaps Laver) would compete with that?

I'd be impressed if he gets any of these slams, but good on him for believing he can.

Re: Agassi Eyes 2005 Grand Slam Sweep

I admire him for his determination... but I'm so scared that he'll crash out early and he decides to retire and that'll be a horrid way to end for someone like him...

SO.. I wish him all the best!!! Go Andre!!

Don't be deceived by the rankings!! Coria, Roddick, Mirnyi, Schuettler, Fish, Safin, Henman, Tursunov, Ljubicic, Bovina, Li Na, Ivanovic, Chan YJ, Dementieva, Vinci, Sugiyama, Coetzer, Tanasugarn, Vaidisova, Zheng, Dokic and Kournikova are the world's best tennis players in the world!!!

The only thing going againts AA is that he was not no.1 of the world for a long period of time. Sampras was no.1 for 6 years. This shows domination.

Emerson has also won each slam twice so he ranks there as among the best.

Borg won 11GS by the age of 26yrs - if AA gets GrandSlam next yr that would be 12 GS by age of 35yrs. Shows Borg's amazing consistency and dominance.

All good points indeed I didn't know what Emerson's combination of 12 consisted of, actually (before my time ).

Sampras was number one for almost three times as long as Agassi, so definitely more dominant than him. Have to at the number one for six years though - whenever people say this it sounds like he was up there for all that time, when in fact it only means that he was number one at the *end* of each of those years, especially the last couple of them.

So I guess I agree this means Agassi can't become best player of all time then, even if he wins the 2005 CYGS . Heck on those Borg terms, even Federer's gonna have his work cut out (7 more in the next 2.5 years!).
