Monte Carlo R3: [9] Simon def. [7] Tipsarevic 6-0 4-6 6-1

Much better play overall from Simon than his first two matches. Some impressive offensive play, good volleying and great counter-punching, and he did a good job maintaining his error count and forcing Janko into mistakes. Janko had tons of chances early in the first set, all three service games he had openings to break, 7 break points in all in the first set, and didn't take any. Completely tanked the end of the first set. Whenever he played patiently aggressive he was winning the points, but he wasn't able to maintain this without making errors, and he didn't serve well enough.

Always a great day when Fixsarevic loses with a scoreline like this.

Berdych | Murray | Tsonga | Monfils | Raonic | Soderling

Gilles was like four walls today. Hilarious returned smash followed by running down the drop volley to break for 5-1.

I didn't see the match but Gillou appears to have displayed his baking skills today.

No coincidence the first and third sets, Janko served below 40% combined, meaning he couldn't immediately get on top of the rallies. Gilles was simply too consistent and too slick for him in the rallies.

Really good match. The second set both players had ridiculous stats for clay, I think Tipsarevic had like 23 winners and 5 errors or something like that in that set. Gilles didn't let the second set bother him and got right back to business. Really happy for him to win at home.

Good for tennis. Fixshitrevic was awful and got what he deserved and then-some in this result. Hopefully this is one of many signs that he will fall out of the top 500.

Good match overall and one of the best matches Gilles has played in a while - he was completely flawless aside from that one service game in set 2 (which he led 40-15). 32/23 for Simon and 32/37 for Tipsy.

Contrary to popular belief, Gilles isn't at his best when he is pushing. Today he was his usual defensive base, but he was constructing the points far better than usual and every couple of points he would inject massive pace into his strokes or else just change things up by approaching the net or serving and volleying. Tipsarevic just didn't know what to do. It was only some great serving and a lapse in Gilles' concentration that won him set 2.

His anticipation was unreal in that point. First faked as if he was running into the open court when Tipsy was hitting the smash before standing his ground, then was sprinting for the drop volley a good second before Tipsy even hit it.

Re: Monte Carlo R3: [9] Simon def. [7] Tipsarevic 6-0 4-6 6-1

allez!

gilles played that match totally right, moved the ball around and looked to attack whenever he could without being reckless. 2nd set janko served amazingly, he hit 9 aces in 5 service games.

3rd set gilles was a little more passive, but his anticipation really won him a few points that really turned the set for him.

janko is hot, and can play some good ball, but his attitude is horrible. really happy gilles put him in his place.

Agree with this.

Clay is such a strange surface for him. He has played some of his best matches of his career because it forces him to be aggressive but half of the time he is downright awful on the surface.
