Indian Wells R2: Berdych def. Stakhovsky 6-7(2) 6-3 6-4
A win is a win, but that was not impressive from Tomas. Never really found his rhythm for any extended period, but Stakhovsky deserves credit for that, as he used his variety and counter-punching skills very effectively and didn't allow Berdych to get into a groove. Stakhovsky returned well, especially the first set, he used the slice very effectively to move Berdych around, keep the ball low and out of Tomas' wheelhouse, and move Berdych into awkward positions, he volleyed very well and attacked the net well off of offensive groundstrokes, hit some effective dropshots and he served well until the third set.
Unfortunately, the Ukrainian had a lapse in form from the middle of the second set to the start of the third set and never recovered from that. Stakhovsky hit 2 DF's to lose serve to open the third set. Tomas' serve bailed him out a lot throughout the match and he won all of the big points the final two sets. He started attacking more patiently and effectively as the match went onward and he did a good job of attacking Stakhovsky's second serves and hit some good passing shots.
Stakhovsky was 0/7 on break points, which ultimately is what decided the result here. Roddick is up next for Berdych.
