All I know is, both players are playing on the same court every match.

Watch the match Fed vs Blake in 2006 final.

It's become clay now.

Why the hell no one wonder why Nadal & Nole both start winning things in 2008?

nadal won IW in 07 I think.

and could the answer to your question be - because thats when they reached their prime?

Their prime+new surfaces.

I didn't say Nad&Nole can't win on fast courts but the slow surfaces are a huge advantage.

Why did Nadal have enough time to chase the balls on a hard court?

you mean in general? well slower surface speed certainly helps a player like him I dont think there is any dilemma about that. but nadal improved tremendously, he adapted, and he was lucky here and there, which is normal when you push for it. so all in all, I dont think there is any asterisks in his wins. conditions change, they favor some over other and still, usually the 'best' comes on top. laver won slams playing on the same surface and I bet he didnt alter between styles did he? nobody shitting in his face coz of it.

reliability...

very true , that was one of the great reasons and federer`s age.

bigmarat talk about multiple slam winners , but djokovic before australian open 2011only had 1 slam , he started to won much more when federer has 30 years old and he is not a great great opponent in slams anymore like he was in 2003-2007 because age ,physical condition and slow courts in slams.

Or is it because that's when Fed started to decline?

Re: What's the difference between IW 04-06 and IW nowadays?

Court speed hasn't changed much. Obviously IW/Miami typically favor the younger athletic players. Federer was obviously the best athlete on hardcourt (along with Hewitt) during his prime years, and hence you saw a lot of wins there. After 07, it became clear that Rafa had become the best athlete, and now its Djokovic.

Having said that, even in Fed's peak, these slow outdoor hards were never his favorite surface. The heat/wind/bad bounces and so forth has never been ideal for a guy who lives and dies off shot timing. You'd see him underhit a lot in order to avoid mistakes, and he relied on his defense a lot more.

The serve helps, sure, but I don't think that's the main explanation. The main explanation is that faster courts with lower bounces suit Federers ground game much more than it does his competitors.

Proud fan of Olderer, the GOAT.

not as much as many people have said because they needed to write an explanation for someone who was presented like a "claycourt player", a "Muster-bis", to win on grass and hardcourts.

In the context of analysts presenting (or having lived) tennis as it was in the 90s, an easy explanation was needed to be popularized for the public.

Even the improvement is not as visible as some people think if you watch Nadal-Fed's semifinal in WTF 2006.

the main change on hardcourts is not that much that he plays "flatter" but that he plays deeper balls.

useless old guy

It's a bit misleading between those two. When you have two early ball-strikers, it can make the sport look like table tennis.

Fed 07: "..... Indian Wells has always been very famous for being quite slow, I think."

Hewitt 06: "Just felt slow conditions out there, really heavy. The balls were fluffing up a lot, you know, after a couple games. When the balls were getting older and older, it just felt like it was hard to crack an egg out there."

Fed 2005: "Well, you know, there's many, many Argentines around, good ones. I think it's a good surface for them. I think I played Chela here last year. It's quite slow, so they've got time to grind from the baseline."

Tennis has no blood passport system, and does basically no out of competition testing.

The methods and drugs used by Armstrong in 1999 would work in tennis right now, with zero chance of being caught (not slightly surprising to anyone familiar with the topic, btw).
