Re: what's your favourite ATP 500?
Barcelona - you can feel the history of the tournament, old school club tournament style, sunny & good build up to RG - prestigious.
Dubai - usually has the strongest field out of the 500s and has had some good matches in the past (e.g. Dubai 06 final)
Don't care for but can see it's importance: Basel - not a big fan of indoor tennis and it's placement in the calendar also makes it hard to care too much
Shouldn't be 500s: Memphis (why?!!), Rotterdam - the field's been rubbish lately (Nadal & Fed both turned up for $1 million tax free appearance fees - clearly no lure in terms of the prestige of the tournament itself...)
Should be a 500: Queens - it would win by a mile as the best 500 (really it should be a Masters but isn't big enough...)
Overall I enjoy Barcelona the most because of when it is, my favourite players usually do well, the trophy's awesome & the club has real history. But in terms of field there's no doubt Dubai has been the most impressive lately - it's got 3 of the top 4 after all and no other 500 has that. If a 500 lacks a certain number of top 10 players for consecutive years its status should really be looked at - winning Memphis next week should not get you the same points as winning Dubai & the USA already has 3 Masters and a slam so hardly needs the 500.
