this will become the mother of all sports quests in modern sports. it will be known going forward simply as "The Quest".

can he snatch a total of 100 titles before he hangs up his racquets? is that a viable goal for him to have?

and also what about 20 slams now that 17 are in the bag?

i know he wants slams but slams dont come easy after 30. he will be one of the exceptions obviously if it happens. where do you see his best chance at another slam? could it be on the u.s. open surface?

somebody won a french open at 31 for instance? what was his name? that is your question of the day. here is a hint: he was 6 foot 5 and he was a left hander.

muscles (rosewall) was making the finals of slams at some ridiculous old age. so if you have the talent and you can keep up on the fitness front you can certainly show up in the finals of slams.

Re: Roger Federer : The Swiss Warrior King's Quest For 100 Titles

the spanish have surpassed the brits in taking the worst of america and somehow managing to make it much worse.

blue clay and model ball girls as marketing strategies for their biggest tennis tournament are perfect examples of this.

I blame Tiriac for it ;)

spainiards are like this... the biggest national tournament of the year is ALWAYS representative of its people... this is spains gift to the world of tennis...

anyways, atp now has two blue clay spanish tournaments, one red clay...

Re: Roger Federer : The Swiss Warrior King's Quest For 100 Titles

Agreed, the blue clay was definitely a diversion from the topic on hand.

Title #74 just got more difficult with the early loss of John Isner.
Isner is one of the few players who can give both Djokovic and Nadal trouble with his big serve and he can deal with the high topspin of Nadal. But Mr. Federer can't depend on Isner to do the work this time, and that will make it more difficult for Federer should he reach the semifinals as expected. Then he would likely have to defeat both Djokovic and Nadal, should they both make it that far, and it would be a difficult task in the conditions here.

Nadal is in the driver's seat now in Miami, if he doesn't waste effort on doubles.
I think Federer would have to beat Djokovic easily to have a chance of beating Nadal the next day, and it's difficult to see that happening. In any case, title #73 was unexpected at the start of IW, so Federer is already ahead of title projections for the year. If title #74 doesn't come at Miami, it might come in Madrid, or in Halle. Nadal would have to exit early at Roland Garros like in 2009 for Federer to have a good chance there.

Respectfully,
masterclass

Unlike indian wells, they actually give you a day off in miami. Everyone plays their semis on friday with a fed-nole semis being the 7pm match. The final is then sunday at 1pm.

Re: Roger Federer : The Swiss Warrior King's Quest For 100 Titles

it is yes and no general masterclass:

#74 is near and far but with conditions. only way nadal has a chance to get his hands on fed is if he lands in the final. he is still playing shit tennis. he can thank his doubles activity and his golf for that. if your singles game is shit---and it is--- and you still wont bother focusing on singles and working hard to improve then you are not here to win a title.

you are here to see if you can get lucky. it is going to be a difficult assignment to deal with murray in the semis. and i dont believe he can beat nole on hard courts.

i believe fed will be in the final.

Re: Roger Federer : The Swiss Warrior King's Quest For 100 Titles

Federer is getting to the semis at most. He will run into nole and they will play at night in super humid conditions where it is even harder to hit the ball through the court.

Fed has yet to beat nole in this run that started post us open. Let's see how he handles playing him since the us open.

Before people start picking him he needs to show he can beat nole first which he hasn't done since last year's french open.
That's why im making nole the favorite. Even if he somehow manages to get through nole, and nadal is in the final. I can't pick against nadal on a court like this irregardless of what happened in indian wells. If nole loses to del potro and tsonga knocks out nadal federe's chances improve but lets not forget about murray on this slow court.

Semis: Djokovic def federer
Nadal def murray

Finals: Nole def Nadal in straight sets.

Hmm Mr. FedVsNole, isn't it a bit misleading saying Federer hasn't beaten Nole since the US Open? I could also say Djokovic hasn't beaten Federer since the US Open.

Since the US Open, they've played in 6 of the same tournaments, where Djokovic has won 1 (Australian Open) and Federer has won 5 (Basel, Paris-Bercy, WTF, Dubai, Indian Wells). It's certainly not Federer's fault that Djokovic was unable to go far enough to face him in those tournaments, for whatever reason. Federer did directly beat players that beat Djokovic and did better to get to the final and win those tournaments. Djokovic did better in the Australian Open and beat the player that beat Federer to win that tournament.

I think it's better to judge each tournament on its own merit with the recent past performances, current conditions, form, etc. in mind. How much one weighs each factor is up to the individual. :) If you feel that Federer doesn't have enough confidence against Djokovic because he hasn't faced him and beaten him since Roland Garros, then of course, you have the right to your opinion, which may or may not be correct.
Each tournament plays differently, so circumstances at a particular tourney can favor one player over another.

Anyway, time will tell. #74 is at stake for now :)

masterclass

Re: Roger Federer : The Swiss Warrior King's Quest For 100 Titles

I understand the last 10 matches have been split. But those matches other than clay have been on faster surfaces where fed has the most chance. Here in miami its a slow center court. Then at night the humidity goes up from mid 30's in the day to mid 50 to 60's at 7-9pm, which is the time they will most likely play if they both make it to the semis on friday night.

If this were a faster court, yeah of course I'd be giving fed a great shot. I just think the slow court and the fact they'll be playing on a humid filled night will give a big edge to nole. Let's see.

Re: Roger Federer : The Swiss Warrior King's Quest For 100 Titles

so is this surface faster than the RG clay last year? i seem to recall that he pretty much dominated him on that slow red clay. and on top of that, no-djok was the in-form player with all the confidence in the world.

does the surface really matter that much? are you giving players any credit for their games?

it aint about the dance floor with him. it is about the dance.

Maybe RG with the Babolat balls(light and fast) and a very thin layer of clay that they rarely water is now fast clay? RG looked like Fed's best slam last year. He looked like the better player of the tournament until he played Nadal. Take out Nadal and Fed wins RG this year. Can't say the same about the other 3 slams. Even if you take out Nadal, other players can beat Federer at AO(Nole), Wimbledon(Tsonga, Berdych?) and USO(Nole).

Re: Roger Federer : The Swiss Warrior King's Quest For 100 Titles

First of all: You can never count Federer out of the slams. He has proven it in the last USO, AO and RG, Federer is still a big gun in slams, even with the 5-set format and the 2 week of intense tennis.
You can never count him out of Wimbledon or USO, even vs Nadal. It's a possible scenario Federer beating Nadal in those surfaces.

Second. Federer almost won over Djokovic in USO, and since then, Federer is playing way better than 2011, and Djokovic is playing worse. I think it's possible for Federer to be the favorite one and to win the SF match.

You can't count Fed out but you can notice the general trend he's shown when a slam match goes to 5 sets. He lost to Tsonga and Djokovic last year in 5 sets and if the French open went to 5 then Djokovic would have won it probably.

Re: Roger Federer : The Swiss Warrior King's Quest For 100 Titles

so you sweating bullets and shitting bricks already and you dont even have to leave your house for this match?

a friendly reminder: its fed who is going into battle. you think he will be going in with your mentality?

you just stay put. nobody can harm you if you keep your doors locked and secure.

Re: Roger Federer : The Swiss Warrior King's Quest For 100 Titles

i think you know why. but i will give you the answer anyway:

clay warrior.

he has a stranglehold on the title there this year and the next. you cant stop him. not at a RG final.
What if (God forbid) something like an injury happens to Rafa before the RG final like it happened in 2009?

Who would you think will win RG then?

#434 ·
Re: Roger Federer : The Swiss Warrior King's Quest For 100 Titles

Federer won't beat Nadal in RG. At least not this year... Maybe next year if Rafa is with only one leg and nose-broken.
He had his chance last year, and a few points determined that match. A very close match (well... not the last set), and great tennis by both.

Re: Roger Federer : The Swiss Warrior King's Quest For 100 Titles

How about 71 first? Then maybe 75 - a do-able goal this year... 100 is a bit too much. He would probably be going against Djokovic's children...

He's on the 73th title now ;)
