this will become the mother of all sports quests in modern sports. it will be known going forward simply as "The Quest".
can he snatch a total of 100 titles before he hangs up his racquets? is that a viable goal for him to have?
and also what about 20 slams now that 17 are in the bag?
i know he wants slams but slams dont come easy after 30. he will be one of the exceptions obviously if it happens. where do you see his best chance at another slam? could it be on the u.s. open surface?
somebody won a french open at 31 for instance? what was his name? that is your question of the day. here is a hint: he was 6 foot 5 and he was a left hander.
muscles (rosewall) was making the finals of slams at some ridiculous old age. so if you have the talent and you can keep up on the fitness front you can certainly show up in the finals of slams.
Roger hasn't won WTF since 2011 and Djokovic is only one behind and if he returns to even decent form, he can possibly add at least another couple WTF titles to his resume to go ahead of Federer. So Roger must win WTF this year as this year is possibly his best & quite possibly his last great opportunity because the field next year will be stronger with the return of Novak, Andy, Milos, Stan etc. I'm glad Federer skipped Paris because he realises the importance of WTF and he will be very determined to end his 6 years long WTF drought. I feel that #96 will happen at WTF.
He'll be the clear favorite and man I'll be overjoyed if he wins it again. Really good decision to skip Paris indeed. Seven WTF's will be a great achievement.
It would be nice if we'll end this year with 96 titles and that the last match would be a Federer - Nadal final. Than 2017 started with a trophy against Nadal and it will end with one. Good year for the mother of all quests indeed:smile2:
Should Fed wins the ATP Finals, then adds 5 to 6 titles by 2019, I think he's got to seriously consider playing a lot more ATP 250 tournaments in order to reach the magical number : 110.
Most Grand Slams, most weeks at n#1 and most tournaments, that would be unreal.
I don't see any way Fed can catch Connors. Connors record is kind of phoney - like Richard Petty's race win record (he won like three races a week on tiny mud tracks in West Virginia). Connors liked to play every tiny US tournament he could to get a check. But, hey, you can't hate the player ... hate the game.
I hope he can continue at a high level like he did in 2017.
But there are many factors to add up.
First of all he had a 5-6 month break. Right now he´s been playing since october.
This year he didn´t have points to defend. Next year he has pressure to defend alot. Nadal also.
Then comes the biggest question mark of all. Djokovic, Murray, Wawrinka, Nishikori and Raonic all coming back, some stronger then other, others rusty.
We just don´t know. We can guess and wish, but that´s about it.

This can pretty much go out the window at this point of his career I think. He'll want to win slams of course. But really be worried about defending points? No I can't see that happening. The man had a stellar 2017, I think the pressure pretty much is of. And that's a good thing I think.
Just ridiculous stuff! That is why he is the most special talent I have ever seen play this game. Just enjoying the ride while it continues. Sunday can't come fast enough!
Another quality compilation there CD, it's these videos that really showcase talent because it shows that many of the "wow" shots that they come out with are no flukes, they can do it repetitively!
So the roadblocks are set up the form of Cilic, Zverev and Sock. First stop before the final station of this year, station 96, is Sock Station. Can't wait. Bring him on, the journey continues, the FedExpress is steaming on!!
Agreed CD. I have really enjoyed masterclass' contributions to this forum since joining: he has a great sense of humour and equally brilliant insights. I am sure he is a great guy as well.
This thread and the Castle are great places to peruse and hang out in here on MTF. Thanks for the creations
It really is too bad about Rafa, but still very hopeful for title 96 here. I don't think Rafa could handle Fed here anyway even if healthy.
Zverev lacks experience, tennis IQ and adaptability. He's powerful and consistent but he can't deal with variety, of which Federer has aplenty and then some.
Only two things could stand between him and title #96. His body and his mind. As evident from the interviews he's been in a great mood all week. Which means he's not very nervous and is happy with his physical condition. I am optimistic.
