Results last couple years:
Madrid: 2009 - Win; 2010 - Final; 2011 - Semis; 2012 - Win.
IW: 2009 - Semis; 2010 - R32; 2011 - Semis; 2012 - Win.
Toronto/Montreal: 2009 - Quarters; 2010 - Finals; 2011 - R16; 2012 - Didn't play.

Clearly Madrid is the tournament Roger has had mosre consistent results the last couple years (even if you don't consider 2009).
The probability of Roger reaching the semis is way higher in Madrid than in IW or Montreal. Of course the probability of reaching the finals will depend if he draws nadal in the semis or not.
Also he has lost in madrid in 2010 and 2011 to nadal, both matches were rather close. He has lost to big-hitters in IW and Toronto/Montreal.
Did you see the US Open and madrid. Roger is less prone to losing against these type of players on clay. Of course he'll still probably have to beat nadal to win the title but if there is a a clay tournament Roger can do it in is Madrid.

Nah, I know that the ATP, as usual, catered to the whining complaints of the 2 divas djokovic and nadal. It was to be expected.

They move well on stereotyped and homogenized surfaces... Change something and they're doomed... unable to adapt

maybe because in the very fast surfaces they can`t use his physicall condition and returning all the balls waaiting that the rival lose the point.

for them , all the fast courts are a disgrace , they needs slower courts to run like horses or moonballing.

They're grinders who love to slide on everything. They rely too much on pushing their knees against the surface. Their knees will pay sooner or later (Pocahontas' ones are already sending worrying signs)

A loss is a loss. Fact is Hamburg and Madrid have always been Rafas least successful clay event out of the 5 he plays.

Federer / Haas / Safin / Gaudio / Kuerten / Youzhny / Nadal / Gonzalez / Ljubicic / Hewitt / Soderling / Wawrinka / Coria / Nalbandian / Kohlschreiber

You are right that loss is a loss but behind every loss there is a reason and here Fed played good and Nadal was tired and hurting.....That's how you lose

Why are we only aiming for 20?

Federer will win another grand slam.
Cilic is not a one slam wonder.

That's one way of looking at it. There's another one. These are the 8 semifinalists of the Madrid Masters in 2012:

Tipsarevic - Del Potro - Berdych - Federer
Radwanska - Hradecka - Azarenka - S. Williams

Not one of them made the finals of Roland Garros. Not one... Out of eight.

It sort of proves that Madrid wasn't exactly the best preparation for the most important event on clay: Roland Garros. It's not surprising that the so called "whiners" are precisely the players who actually felt that they had a shot at winning Roland Garros and took their preparation seriously. And they were right: they made the finals, not only of Roland Garros, but of all the other Masters on clay as well...

I'm sure that if a flashy millionaire managed to buy his way into the ATP and produced a fantastically hyped, celebrity&entertainment-oriented Masters 1000 tournament on a surface completely different to the Wimbledon grass, in the middle of the grass season, players like Federer and Murray would not like it, would complain about it and would most likely skip it: why would they jeopardise a Wimbledon title for 1000 points?

Results show that Rafa and Nole made the right decision in bowing out of the Madrid Masters early.

And the ATP made the right decision going back to the normal Madrid surface.

I'm sure Tiriac will have a blue clay tournament soon, nothing wrong with that: just don't place it in the middle of the clay season, it could prove costly to the players who actually have a shot at winning Roland Garros.

Re: Federer : The Mother Of All Quests : 20 Slams And 100 Titles.

Fed can't dominate clay tourneys, even since his first year; he couldn't dominate hardcourts the last 4 years against Nadal either. He needed luck to beat Nadal & Djoker on clay (the reason for winning was not that Fed's draws were difficult because no one except Nadal & Djoker won big clay tourneys consistently).
Losing Masters titles in a 20 month period & reaching finals with easy year-long schedules didn't count as "domination". Sorry to burst Fedcrier's bubble.
