Will John Isner make Top 10 in 2012?

Currently ranked #17, he has not much to defend, and can make up lots of points in clay season, especially if he plays Monte Carlo.

I think he can make Top 10 in 2012.

Absolutely. I didn't like him at all some months ago but he just showed that he is capable of doing awesome things.

Easily, if he plays and tries at the clay events. He'll even be seeded for the Masters so he can avoid terrible draws.

Seeing his ranking and points, he has decent chance after the Wimbledon.

Never ever give up

Top 10 doesn't mean what it used to. You have 4 fools gobbling up all the points.

That being said, yes he will make the top 10 this year.

Re: Will John Isner make Top 10 in 2012?

Yeah, it is a very difficult question to answer.

He definitely CAN, but it is debatable whether he WILL.

Three key things in his favour for the next 7 months:
- one match win to defend over RG and Wimbledon. He can easily improve on that.
- poor Masters results over spring/summer 2011. He should be aiming for R16 in IW and Miami, so a small improvement is possible there. He won just two matches over Rome, Madrid, Canada and Cincy - he should be targeting an average of at least one in each draw.
- plenty of points to earn in optionals. He played a non-existent schedule in 2011, counting points in just ONE 500 event. He should be aiming to play FOUR 500 events this year, and would surely score some big, easy points in home draws. He'd then be eligible to count maybe THREE 250 events, and easy points will be available in a few of those draws.

Basically, he needs to play a full schedule, and make a small improvement to his results in Masters events. It is very possible.

I'll stick my neck out and vote a reluctant YES.

Typical overreaction. Calm down MTF. Isner did a great job today but he is not consistent enough to go that far. Hope I'll be proven wrong though.

I hope he does. It's about time that he resurfaces from the Wimbledon hangover.

Re: Will John Isner make Top 10 in 2012?

If guys like Tommy Robredo, Gilles Simon, and Marcos Baghdatis can make it into the Top 10, then surely John Isner can as well.

I don't think he has a good shot to go deep at any Slams, because the Best-of-5 format is a disadvantage for John due to his massive size. He just gets worn down before the 2nd week too often. To his credit, he continues to fight it out and has had some decent results, but I don't think he will be able to pick up huge points in Slams overall.

But he can play better in Masters events, and really can beat anyone in a best-of-3 match on a given day. I'd like to see him pull it together and go deep in a few of those.

Re: Will John Isner make Top 10 in 2012?

No he won´t do this this year, even if he will it doesn´t mean so much with guys like Almagro, Tipsarevic, Fish, Melzer-Verdasco-Simon not so long ago, he definitely can do it, but don´t think he will, we have big 4, Berdych, Tsonga, Ferrer very consistent, so 7 spots are occupied for sure, than we have Delpo who should be there if healthy, than Soderling depends how soon he will be back, but he is top 10 player easily.. and than we have one spot left for guys like Monfils, current top 10 players, and other top 20 players like Dolgopolov, Gasquet and others... so really it istn´t like Isner will make top 10 immediately... i think he will be in top 10 in his career but not this year

Anyway totally true. But 4th rounds are good enough too, he needs about 800-900 points for the top 10. With Masters and tournaments like Memphis he has real chance I think.
IW/Miami can be great for him..

Never ever give up

Re: Will John Isner make Top 10 in 2012?

Why? Because he abused the old man?

He would have to be way more consistent against players who actually have a backhand and a return.
