Top 4: Can ranking be maintained playing only the Majors?

Putting aside the fact that they'd be losing a large chunk of prizemoney, would any of the Top 4 players be able to maintain their ranking if they only played the four Majors and the World Tour Finals? Would the rest of the players gain too many points in the other tournaments and take over?

It's very unlikely that a player could maintain a top 4 ranking by only playing the majors. Winning all 4 gets you 8,000 pts (what No. 3 Federer has) and going on to win all 4 is a stretch in itself.

Well, if someone went:

AO- F, 1200
RG- W, 2000
W-SF, 720
USO- F, 1200
WTF- W, 1500 (5-0)

That would be 6620 points, good enough for #5 in the world.

But there is no way you can expect to put up such results without playing warmup events.
