I AGREE.

Last time I checked serving is part of tennis. Roddick's serve on proper grass like queen's is unreturnable. So Roddick is the better player.

Rofl, what poor logic from the imaginary princess and queens girl. Take away most player's best shot and the rest of their game falls apart. Roddick still had some of the meanest groundstrokes during his peak of 2003/2004. A peak Roddick would of been hell to break on fast grass, however, Rafter may have slightly too much overall game compared to Andy.

Re: Better grass court player: Rafter or Roddick?

Rafter had the more appealing and skilled grass game, that is for sure. Roddick's serve alone was as effective as Rafter's entire game though, which is the reason for the slightly better results for Roddick(along with a very high level of competition for Rafter).

Grass does suit Roddick's game in a few ways that many wouldn't think of though, other than the serve. He is an underrated mover on the surface, and is actually decent at passing when his opponent comes to net(which happens more often on grass). Also, his funky forehand doesn't really lose effectiveness with a lower bounce, he is still able to hit heavy rally shots with it and unload on it when needed(not any time recently, but back in his good days). Also, his terrible slice is actually a useful shot on the surface against most players, though obviously it doesn't have enough bite to trouble any of the top guys.

With all due respect to Andy Roddick, Patrick Rafter.

Roddick's mental fortitude on grass was immense pre 2008 as well because he was just impossible to break almost. That is an immense advantage - everything else is trivial in comparison.

are you kidding me, Roddick's game works wonders on grass courts. his serve (the best serve in the game at one point) is perfect for grass and his slicing works great on grassssssss.

Rafter had great touch no doubt but Roddick's power game really really works when on grass court. he definitely preformed more impressively at his best moments on the surface that Rafter at his best moments. Roddick was sublime in 2009 at Wimbledon, better than Rafter ever was on the surface

Not sure... excellent question. Rafter's game was more quintessential but Roddick was very imposing and powerful, and both were stopped by GOAT candidates on their favoured surface.

Take away Sampras' serve and he's in big trouble.

Take away his volley's and he's really screwed.

Make him play on one leg and I'd kick his ass (well, it would probably be closer at least).

But seriously, Isner and Karlovic both have a better serve than Roddick. Haven't seen them in a Wimbledon final just yet.

EDIT: It's actually amazing how underrated Roddick is. I wonder how many other men that have been consistent top 10 for 10(?) straight years "suck" according to most people.

I'd go so far as to say that Roddick is the most underrated player (in tennis history?). Might make for an intereting thread. Everybody loves to jerk off over Safin, Nalbandian, etc. Give me a guy that delivers year in and year out over a guy that has "amazing potential" any day.

EDIT: Actually, the most underrated player has to be Nadal. The only moonballing mug to win 10 slams (and make it to 15 finals).

Take away Fed's FH and today's racket technology for Nadal and they are nothing either you know. Rafter just had more weapons then Roddick does. Roddick's game is primarily filled with holes ever since he lost that big FH. Then all he was was just a serve

And yet he ended the year top 10 for 9(?) consecutive years, failing to do this in 2011 (much of this due to injuries), but he was still seeded in the top 16 at AO12.

If all Roddick has is one weapon, against most players, that's apparantly enough.

Seems as though that single weapon had LOTS of staying power as well.
