Is Novaks best surface hardcourts or clay?

I think even though he won Wimbledon in 2011, its far to early to say that grass was his best surface, since traditionally its been his worst.

But im sort of confused after the 2012 Australian Open where everyone is suggesting Nadal has more chance of toppling Djokovic at Roland Garros should they meet there.

Hang on, doesnt anyone remember what happened last year in the masters series? It was actually Nadal running Djokovic very close in the HC encounters. Nole actually destroyed Nadal a lot worse on clay.

Infact Nadal limped through the clay masters and very early on in RG 2010/2011 looked terrible.

I for one feel Nadal has LESS chance against Djokovic on clay then he does on hardcourt. Especially now its clear that Novak is every bit as fit as Nadal. That 5 set factor wont come into it. Infact id go so far as to say id be very shocked if Nadal even forced Djoker to 5 at Paris.

"I did not play my best tennis, no? And..that is what enable him to win..to win this match no? "

- Rafael Nadal, ever so "humble", - press conference after shock 4 set loss to Robeen Soderling @ 2009 French Open 4th round.

Don't mix up Rafa's chances and Novak's best surface. The best surface overall I think everyone will agree is hard. But solely against Rafa it may be clay (although to be clear, I think we still need to see best-of-5 match on it). Rafa simply can't outplay/outgrind Novak on baseline anymore, hence is trying to become more aggressive in these matches (evident from Sunday's final). This strategy is absent on clay, because Novak has even more time to return aggressive shots, while maybe Rafa hasn't yet figured out the exact clay style against him - he hasn't experienced that challenge on the surface for a while now.

lost 4 sets and won none against novak on clay last year! I am sure this year might be different, but if anything novak dominated him on clay even more!

Novak is complete player now, it means he can dominate on any surface clay, grass or hard.

Re: Is Novaks best surface hardcourts or clay?

I think Nole's best surface is still hardcourt. Clay court is probably far from his best surface, but it's probably a great match up when it's against Rafa. It's easier for Novak to retrieve Rafa's balls during rallies on clay, that's for sure.

Re: Is Novaks best surface hardcourts or clay?

There is no sense in defining Nole's best surface through his rivalry with Nadal because Djokovic is the superior player in practically every department of the game so the type of surface has nothing to do with this.
Example?
Grass seems to be clearly Novak's worst surface and still he won the Wimbledon final pretty comfortably.

Who cares when he's destroying Nadal everywhere?

Re: Is Novaks best surface hardcourts or clay?

its grass - the way he beat nadal at wimbledon was the most impressive and dominant of any of his wins over him. especially considering the way nadal was at wimbledon 2010 and 2011 to that point, and was coming off the back of winning RG

Re: Is Novaks best surface hardcourts or clay?

if the grass court season was more than 2 tournaments long he'd have more achievements on it, but doesnt make him any less impressive on the surface
