Question The Meaning of Bagels...C/P

Bagel Bar

A while ago, we looked at the prevalence (or lack thereof) of tiebreak sets. That got us thinking about their inverse, bagels (6-0 sets).

Now obviously one cannot ban 6-0 sets, as one theoretically could with tiebreaks -- unless one were to "call" a set at 5-0. But players have come back from 5-0 down, so there is no excuse to introduce a "five game rule." But it's worth asking how often bagels actually happen.

Bagels are more common than we expected on the ATP. In 2000, there were exactly 700 6-0 sets (singles main draw and qualifying), and even 60 instances of 0-6 sets. And the number went up in 2001; 816 6-0 sets, though only 50 0-6 sets. The rate stayed about the same this year; 370 6-0 sets through Roland Garros, and 34 0-6 sets.

So much for the theory that the serve completely dominates on the ATP.

We were surprised to find a lower rate of bagels on the women's tour; through the U. S. Open, the women had had only 740 "bagel matches" in singles and doubles and qualifying and the singles in $50K and higher Challengers. The rate of 0-6 sets was lower still: only 35, including some "split bagels": In the Australian Open first round, Dechy/Loit beat Cortez/Serra Zanetti 0-6 6-0 6-2; at Miami, Tatiana Poutchek beat Nathalie Dechy (who must have a thing about splitting bagels) 6-3 0-6 6-0 in the second round; in Rome qualifying, Julia Vakulenko beat Eva Dyrberg 6-4 0-6 6-0; at Roland Garros, Alina Jidkova topped Saori Obata 0-6 6-2 6-0 in a first round match; and in the second round of U. S. Open qualifying, Denisa Chladkova topped Maria Vento-Kabchi 0-6 6-2 6-0 while Lehnhoff beat Dulko 6-4 0-6 6-0 (the only instance, obviously, of two split bagels in a tournament).

From there, it was just a hop, skip, and a bunch of CPU cycles to start looking at the "bageliest" of them all (we hope our search algorithm worked right). For these purposes, we looked only at singles main draw WTA matches through the U. S. Open. (We decided there were too many bagels on the men's side.) There were 279 bagels scored in those matches. The players who scored the bagels, with the number of matches containing bagels, were (note that this won't add up to 279 because of the handful of double bagels):

That's 114 players, quite a few of whom aren't even in the Top 100. Fully 60 of them have scored at least two bagels. Some of the latter list really surprised us. (Lubomira Bacheva? Denisa Chladkova? Jelena Kostanic?)

TC, it means there are more bagels than I ever imagined!

And to my surprise, players who aren't even close to being top players, routinely win bagel sets!

Egalite!

Hingis would have more if she hadn't sat out two grandslams, and serveral months.

She usually handles her early round opponents with ease, then loses to a Williams or Capriati.

In fact, i'm surprised her number is so high.

I lack direction.

Chocking makes me sad.
