Re: What was Nikolay Davydenkos best chance to win a slam to date?

He didn't choke against Haas. Missing one return on match point doesn't constitute a choke. Haas just went for broke after being 2 sets to 1 down and made most of the winners. QF is too early too call anyway and Gonzalez was playing once in a lifetime tennis that tournament. Fed waiting in the final.

He lost quite a few SF to peak Federer so not much chances there either. I'd say 2005 RG SF was his best chance but really, he has never been in a position where you would say he was a real contender for the slam.

Re: What was Nikolay Davydenkos best chance to win a slam to date?

Has to be 2005 Roland Garros. He would of faced a green Nadal and we all know that Davydenko certainly has the game to trouble Nadal, and he certainly did that over the years and even pushed Nadal to the limit in Rome. Either way, I still think Nadal would win 60% of the time if that final was played out.

Aside from that, pretty much all the other slams are not in discussion for this. Either he lost to Federer or he would have met Federer. Roger is just too tough of a match-up for him, he has too many variations for Nikolay to cope with for a best of 5 match. You can say Davydenko choked some of their matches, most notably AO 2006, FO 2007 and AO 2010 where he had plenty of break chances and actual breaks in many of those sets, however, Federer had a lot to do with it still. He got plenty of balls back with interest to force Nikolay into errors.

An interesting fact to point out, however, when looking at Davydenko's chances against Nadal, especially at that Roland Garros 2005 event, is that they have never played in each other in a slam event let alone a best of 5 match ever.

Federer / Haas / Safin / Gaudio / Kuerten / Youzhny / Nadal / Gonzalez / Ljubicic / Hewitt / Soderling / Wawrinka / Coria / Nalbandian / Kohlschreiber

Re: What was Nikolay Davydenkos best chance to win a slam to date?

AO 2010, Davy was at such a high level.

Around that time the tennis he played was nothing short of brilliant, he just crumbled badly after that great start against Fed.

I didn't even remember this match mentioned in a earlier post, 2005 RG but this may have been the one match that mattered also.

Davy has had his chances but at the end of 2009 it looked like he had control mentally to make the next step.

BTW, Davy's only 5'10" so a shorter player can do some serious damage if the proper skills are there.

Re: What was Nikolay Davydenkos best chance to win a slam to date?

AO 2010 he was the man in form and it was in his hands.

The current greatness league of active players in order of achievements to date (a factual comparison rather than fan biased assessment):

Federer 17 GS, 6 Year End Masters, 24 Master Series.
Nadal 14 GS, 27 Master Series, 1 Olympic Gold.
Djokovic 9 GS, 4 Year End Masters, 24 Master Series.

Ferrer is the true case of shorter men still being able to do serious damage as he is even shorter than Nikolay.

None. Baldenko is a clown of the highest order. He never had a chance to win a slam.

Why do you bother "contributing" to threads about players that have beaten Nadull when you just spew the same shit every time.

"Nadull" has nothing to with it. Saying that Baldenko isn't slam champion material isn't "spewing shit". It's cold, hard truth which his 1-2 fanboys haven't accepted. For all his "talent" - he was the worst #3 ever and fixer at that

The thread is about his best "chance" to win a slam, not which slam he should have won. Its a perfectly legitimate question which you chose to shit up as usual with your propensity to call everyone without a slam a clown of the highest order.

Re: What was Nikolay Davydenkos best chance to win a slam to date?

At the FO 2005, He had a decent chance there to take down Nadal, but I would say his best chance was at the 2006 AUs Open,. He had Federer on the ropes in that QF and could just as easily have won that match in 4. Had he won, he would have faced Kiefer in the semis and Baggy in the final. And i think he would have beaten both of them. And yeah he was very "in-form" at the Aussie Open 2010, again lost (blew it rather) against Rog. Of course, he lost so many big matches to Federer. People talk about how Federer stopped Roddick, Hewitt and all, he has hurt Niko's career a lot too beating him in so many big matches...

Davydenko has a winning record against Nadal and hasnt beaten Federer as many times as haters wanted to. Why do you even ask this?

"In my opinion he's the best player ever. When you play tennis, playing Federer is kind of a dream because you can see he does everything you would love to do on the court" - Fabrice Santoro

Re: What was Nikolay Davydenkos best chance to win a slam to date?

AO 2010 against Federer is great example of choking from point to point , not just big points . Davydenko finished 2 months of 2009 as probably the best player on tour . Continue if not even better in first 9 matches of 2010 , first set and half against Fed he played even better , had a chance for double break in second set , Fed returned the break in next game with great play and then Denko disappeared from the court . Surely Fed raised his game but Denko from nowhere stared to play as badly as he is playing at the moment when can't beat anybody . I was shocked watching that match . As Fed fan this match and RG SF against Delpo was 2 matches in which till today I don't know how Fed won . Denko would beat Tsonga easily, and Murray in slam final would be a good draw, but again is anything good for Kolya when he succeeded to lose that QF match
