Fed hasen't won a GS in the last 2 years .
Fed can get to number 1 without winning a slam .

I'm not sure where you're getting at with this

Last time Fed had a post-Miami run like you expect here, it was in 2009, that's all.

“There’s so many athletes, tennis players around the world,” he continued, trying to put his life into some kind of perspective, “they want to be the best in what they do. They want to succeed. Many of them, they don’t succeed in the end. I’m fortunate to have this opportunity and succeed.”

If he can't beat a top player then he is not becoming a top player again, everything else is a fairy tale.

Not if Fed makes it to the final of 2 of those slams. He's now gaining points. Add another couple of 1000's and he would be pretty darn close to the top if not at top
Fed only reached the Quarters of Wimbledon last year . He can vastly improve ranking points there .

you do NOT understand the ranking system. so you are telling me, let's say Nadal defends RG, or Djokovic defends W ... yeah, they are not gaining any points but they are still maintaining their lead... get it? hope this helps. gee

Ok , so what happens if Nole Defends Wimbledon by beating Roger in the Final ?

Nole stays the same and Roger GAINS 840 Points

What happens if Nole Defends the US open and Beats Roger in the Final ?

Nole gains nothing and Roger gains 480 points

So yeah , what were you saying about how the rankings work ?

Where do you think he will get...2000 more points he needs to get to #1 then? Add 1000 points that Novak might get in Monte Carlo and he might need even more. He needs to win one of those finals to be able to do that. Like it's said above if he reached SF/F in Miami and MC there would be an outside chance for it. But he missed a chance on 700-1000 points there and now he needs a slam for a shot at #1.

man, in that scenario, yes Fed will gain some points but he will not get back to #1. it's very simple. Rog might overtake #2 but that's it. I hope you understand what I'm talking about. Fed has to win slams in order to get back to #1.

one more thing, it's super easy for Djokovic to pick extra 1400 points or so by simply playing well the Asian swing. he is playing MC etc.

Here are the countable points earned by the top four players after Shanghai 2011 and through Miami:

Federer: 5855
Djokovic: 4100
Nadal: 2210
Murray: 2060

I didn't miss them: currently, both Nadal's and Federer's points from Davis Cup are non-countable.

For these scenarios to occur, Nadal would have had to lose earlier than the SF, or lose to Federer.

So, ummmmm.....no.

You are only considering the points themselves, and not the road TO the points.

EDIT: I was assuming Fed was No. 3 in these scenarios. If he were No. 2, that would mean that he would have outdone Nadal during the clay season, which I don't see happening either.

As of now, Fed's not playing Monte Carlo (and will lose however many points a QF appearance is) and Nadal will likely at LEAST make the finals. He'd still be behind Nadal.

Wouldn't Rafa's points from Davis Cup count right after Monte Carlo?

RAFAEL NADAL and GRIGOR DIMITROV

Rafa winning at least one slam in 10 consecutive years is the best achievement in Open Era tennis since Laver won all 4 Grand slam tournaments in the same year!

Don't ever underestimate the heart of a champion!

for Nadal they will count on monday the 16th of april when his result from Monte-Carlo last year drops, and they will stay in his rankings after Barcelona if he gets less than 280 points in either Monte-Carlo and Barcelona.

For Federer they will also count on monday the 16th of april when his result from Monte-Carlo last year drops, and they will stay in his rankings if he withdraws from Halle and loses in the first round of the Olympics.

What is "non-countable" at the moment gets countable on the day when better results drop
