Or will Federer gain points? Another 240 (lose in Final) or another 640 (win title)?

Big Fedal match coming up.
People keep mentioning that Sampras has one more week at #1 than Roger, but Pete also has one more YE at #1 than Roger. In the Open Era, Pete has 6 YE at #1, Fed and Connors have 5. MacEnroe and Lendl have 4, Borg has 2.

Well, Federer's chances to regain the top spot improved a bit today after his win over Nadal and Djokovic's loss to Isner.

If Federer wins tomorrow he will be:

5810 points since Usopen

Well ahead of:

Murray with 3200 points
Djokovic with 3100 points
Nadal with 2430 points

Clay season is coming so Nadal will climb up fast on that list, Federer better get this title and get a good result in Miami (atleast SF).

Well, if Feds can pwn Nadull here, he should be able to attempt it on clay. If he can get a result in Miami or somewhere where RN is not playing, he can get the #2 and hope Novak takes care of RN. Interesting what happens from here on out.

He could very well beat Nadal in Madrid, maybe even in Rome but RG would be too much to ask.

Hope he doesnt play Monte Carlo even if he could get alot of points there, save energy for Halle-Wimbledon-Olympics.

Don't under-estimate Fed's ability to lose to Rafa, even though he wins today!

The race for the #1 spot just got a little more interesting.

Federer / Haas / Safin / Gaudio / Kuerten / Youzhny / Nadal / Gonzalez / Ljubicic / Hewitt / Soderling / Wawrinka / Coria / Nalbandian / Kohlschreiber

After IW (provided Rainerer will win today), Nole will have 12.670 points, Nadal 10.175, and Federer 9.350.
So, just a little over 3.000 points between 1st and 3rd. Up until the end of Wimby, Nole defends 5.970, Nadal 5.345 and Fed 2.510, if my math is correct. So, I tell you, If Federer wins Wimbledon, I´m stating today, 18-03-2012, that he will be Nº1 imediately after that, even without the Olympics or the US Masters Series and US Open (and even if he decided not to play Monte Carlo, as he did).

Fed making the RG final and defending all those points is far from guaranteed. Novak and Nadal are still favourites to defend a lot of their points and Fed is still not favoured to win Wimbledon - he's lost in the quarters the last two years. One of Nadal or Novak may falter, but both? Unlikely.

Yesterday the court was NOTHING like clay. Fed could not finish points on clay like he did yesterday. To gain points on clay Fed needs to hope that Rafa loses to other players and that he himself doesn't get upset as he did at points last year....

Madrid is faster than Indian Wells and Feds backhand is really great everytime they played each other there, if he plays this good there he can win Madrid.

Agree there - Madrid he could win but I really think Rafa might not play Madrid. He hates that tournament - the altitude, the owner, the blue clay - just not fun. But even there I think Rafa would not be easy to put away - one can't ignore just how much the conditions played a part yesterday - not cold and not windy means potentially a very different match.

Also I can't see Fed keeping this up - even if he played well yesterday, overall I don't think his level was that great this week and all these matches will catch up to him at some point. Can't count out Fed but I think Rafa will win next time - the WTF loss didn't affect the Aus Open after all... Which was a bad loss for Fed in retrospect as I think he'd have handled Novak in the final.

I think it's certainly possible. His win against Nadal was pretty important, and if he wins today against Isner it gets even more interesting. Federer doenst have nearly as many points to defend as Nadal and Djokovic and if he continues this form then he could take back that ranking at some point this year.

Bad for Nadal too. I feel Federer would have silenced stiff-Djokovic in half the match time those two slugged it out, before Djokovic would have gotten those juices flowing...

On the positive side for Nadal, it looks like that herculean effort from Djokovic has come at a price. Novak has been ho-hum in both Dubai and IW. But as long as Nadal doesnt capitalise But you are right, Nadal will be the favourite again next time Fedal play...
